This is a really short little drabble I did for a little project on tumblr. Enjoy.
"Joel?" Chocking back a horrific sob, the girl brought her small hands to cup his face. "You can't leave, yet. You can't leave me." Her green hues stared into his, searching for some sort of answer to this horrible tragedy. "You never sang for me. You didn't get to teach me how to swim and…" Taking a shallow breath, it dawned on her how much she was hurting him at this very moment. She was being selfish. Oh, so selfish. Ellie fell silent for a few minutes before dropping her hands from his face.
"I'm sorry." Wiping the tears from her dirty cheeks, she licked her lips and moved in an attempt to be closer to him. Her left arm wrapped around his midsection, and her head moved to rest on his chest. She began to listen to his unsteady breathing, and the sound alone caused more tears to brim her eyes. "I think Heaven will be real cool." The tears began to flow, but she didn't care. She continued talking. "Lots and lots of food will be up there, I know it." She shut her eyes. "And Sarah will be up there waiting for you. She'll.. She'll be real happy to see you." She could have sworn she felt her heart break at that very moment.
"I'll be up there soon, too. Very soon." Ellie hoped he wouldn't read too much into that statement. "It'll be like a big ol' party. It'll have us wondering why we didn't go meet the big guy in the sky sooner."
Ellie could tell he was struggling; that he was in pain. "You can let go now, Joel." She clenched hard onto the fabric of his flannel shirt. "I love you." She felt his whole body go limp. She sat up on her elbow to look at his face. His eyes were closed, and he had a faint smile hanging upon his lips. Collapsing back down to his side, she clung to him. There was no way she was going to live without him. She was sick of losing everyone. It was time for it to all stop. It was time for her to join them. She knew this now.
