Sora wasn't innocent.
He didn't think he was naïve, either, but he wasn't as sure about that. It was sure though, that he was no innocent.
He'd killed things. He was still killing things. Maybe some people didn't think they were alive, but they moved and made noise and some of them talked to him- and he killed them.
When he'd woken up in Traverse Town, he'd had the thought nagging at his mind, but had shoved it away until Leon and Yuffie explained the Heartless, and he couldn't deny it any more. His world was gone. His home and family and friends had been swallowed down by the Darkness, by what he'd struggled so fearfully against in his dreams.
He'd lost.
He kept the hope that Kairi was alive, since what had happened in the cave had just been too weird for her to be dead. And Riku- he knew Riku was stronger than him, if anyone could go into the Darkness like that and come out on top, it was Riku.
Sora was so relieved to see him in Traverse Town. All those doubts in the back of his mind could just shut up, Riku was fine.
Then Riku made him doubt himself.
Sora hadn't forgotten about Kairi. Riku's words stung deep in his heart though, because he was right, too too right, just not about Kairi. Sora didn't want to forget Destiny Islands- it just hurt too much. When home, family, bubbled up in his mind, and then the knowledge that they didn't exist anymore came crashing back, he shoved it all to the away. It broke his heart to think of home, and he knew he couldn't let that happen.
Something precious was safe in his heart. He couldn't let it break, not yet.
It almost did, on Captain Hook's ship, when Riku took Kairi away. Riku's eyes were too full of hurt and anger and betrayal- that's not fair, you're betraying me –and he'd lost Kairi again.
They were so lucky the fight took his mind off it.
Then they'd finally gotten to Hollow Bastion. That had been so confusing at first; Sora needed to find Beast, to thank him for making everything clear. The Beast's words had cut through the confusion, inspired him that even if there wasn't any hope, he could make hope. Never give up.
When Sora'd realized what he had to do to free Kairi, it didn't bother him. The dark Keyblade was warm in his hand, pulsing steadily with the six princess's hearts. He raised it, smiled-
And thought of home.
