Alouette

The beach was so beautiful, Stephanie thought, as the sun set peacefully over the vast blue ocean. She sat cross-legged on a random stone bench, watching the people of her country playing on the beach. The warm sea breeze was making her drowsy.

Too bad she couldn't sleep.

Yes it was true; Stephanie Jean-Baptiste had insomnia. Trauma-induced insomnia, probably. Why? Because exactly a month ago, a stupid earthquake rocked her world…and not in a good way either. This left her scarred for life. Or, at least she thought she was.

But, watching the waves always did calm her down a bit. She swayed as they swayed, taking in the beauty that was nature. Her problems seemed to go away a bit. They returned, though, as a jolt of pain shot though her left leg. She bit her tongue to prevent from groaning in pain.

Stephanie sighed; she probably shouldn't have helped with the relief efforts; everyone said that she should rest. That had set her recovery a good three years back. Not that she minded at all, especially when she was able to save so many lives.

But, at the same time, so many were lost.

200,000. That number kept her awake at night, giving her horrible nightmares. 200,000 thought to be dead; 200,000 lives cut short; 200,000 parts cut from her. Yet, you couldn't tell that from seeing everyone frolicking and looking so happy on the beach. She had even seen a cruise ship pass by a couple weeks ago.

She brought her knees to her chest and rested her head on them. Stephanie preferred not think about such depressing topics. Particularly because someone will come looking for her soonand make her go back to bed. She honestly wished she could rest, but it was too soon.

An obnoxious chirping was heard in her right ear. She blinked; it was a bird, a Hispaniolan Trogon to be in fact. She blinked once more before smiling at it; those birds always made her happy.

"Hey, little fella," Stephanie said. "Why aren't you with your friends?" the little bird titled its head before pecking her hand and flying away. Stephanie scowled.

"Damn bird…" She cursed halfheartedly; she wasn't in the mood. But, she was in a much better mood than before. That bird made her remember something; specifically, a song.

Francis had taught to her one very boring day. It was stupid and a bit gruesome but it made her feel better whenever she was down. And that was exactly what she needed.

"Alouette, gentille Alouette…"

Came to me randomly one afternoon. Thought i would write it down. Please enjoy.

In honor of the Haiti earthquake. And the Alouette song because it makes me smile
