I remember my first night my family and me

We were inside the fence of the camp

With no friends I could see

My heart yearned for adventure at a fast rate

Not fearing for my life behind this barbwire gate

The men in uniform controlled our existence

Us Jews grim with despair

But we still kept persistence

More and more of us started to disappear

But I still stood tall without any fear

As I watched each of us in our striped pyjamas fade

Some of the hungriest tried to escape

But the soldiers told us that with their lives they had paid

As food became scarcer we all grew thin

Through the fence I would stare and scan for any kind of food tin

It was then that from inside the fence I would peer

A boy from the outside smiled

As he ran to the fence things soon became clear

Thankful to finally have a friend

My ongoing isolation could finally end

But it was the prison camp general's son and with me he could not be

But he ignored his father

And all just to become friends with me

I am confused to what all this is about

To be with him I wish I could just shout

Our friendship thrived but we knew there was one problem in range

We were parted by the fence

But we located a hole in the wire that could have that change

Fitting a pair of striped pyjamas as quick as he can

Then through the hole in the fence he soon ran

What a sight it was as we were together at last

And no one noticed

Not even the soldiers who continuously walked past

All day inside the fence we laughed and played

We only parted when come time of the suns last hour rayed

Only one day inside the fence was our play disturbed

The soldiers made us frightened Jewish march

Each face famished with fear of what would soon have occurred

I knew something bad was happening as I stared down at each marching shoe

The fear in everyone else's eyes told me they knew it too

The soldiers opened a pair of heavy metal doors

Into the big white room we were herded

The men closed them behind us like they made the laws

Some women began to cry while others looked like their minds were about to break loose

But I stayed fearless holding hands with my new friend as we were both confused

Looking around a scent seeped into the room

I clutched my friends hand tighter

A mistiness around my head in a loom

As our play time memories flooded back for what I was thinking my friend knew too

I looked into his eyes one last time and silently said "me and you, for our time here is through."
