A/N: Not mine and all that lot. No profit, no foot stepping, none of that. Also, no "dancing" or swearing, sorry. And the pairing is not really solid.

I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left traveling on my own because there's no one else.

He sat on the steps, not wanting to go up, not able to go down. Part way between levels, between emotions.

He wanted to go to her--to see her, just one more time. He wanted to knock on the door, tear past her tacky blond mother, and to find her slouched down in a chair in sloppy overalls, her messy hair pulled into pigtails. He just wants to breathe the same air as her, just to see her, just to burn that face, those eyes, the feel of it all into his mind, to remind himself that there were beautiful things, if you looked for them, that the world wasn't dark empty space and running from disaster to disaster, war and violence like a pinball stuck inside a game, pinged back and forth forever.

But then he wanted to run, to leave that silly dirty apartment complex, to find a planet so vast, so dangerous, so different that for a moment he could be caught up in the adventure, the danger, the task of doing something right.

And yet...

When swept away, when miles and galaxies and decades away, he'd find himself suddenly feeling it--feeling that silly human girl, inches away. He could reach out his hand and take hers, and it would be just like...

Just like it could never be.

There's me.

Half way up the steps, unable to go up or down, and as the lights darkened around him, he found himself lost again, more lost than he'd ever thought possible.

So intent in his dwelling, in his selfish moment of weakness, he didn't notice the girl until she'd past him. His hearts almost stopped as she dashed past, not giving him a single look, as though he were invisible on the stairs. Watching her skip down the steps--for work, or to go see the idiot boyfriend--he found himself able to stand. He walked down the steps, heading back to the closest thing he had left to home, and for a moment, just a fraction of a second, he almost felt whole again.
