Two.
There was going to be two.
He didn't know what to do with one, let alone two.
Why did there have to be two?
Vincent looked at the cheery, spectacled woman in front of him in the white lab coat. He wished with all his being he could burn that lab coat, but that would require too much effort at the moment. The woman was going on in technical terms about how the process was going to proceed from there. He glanced at the small, fragile-looking-yet-not woman lying on the cushioned table next to him. In the darkened room with only the glow of the monitor, he could see her eyes wide with joy and something he couldn't seem to describe. It was like she had a glow of her own.
The doctor said something to the young woman. The young woman's arm flung out to point at the monitor. "Look, Vinnie! You can see their heartbeats!" She gave a joyous look at him before her eyes became glued to the monitor once more.
Vincent broke his gaze from the young woman and directed it to the monitor as well. Among all the strange, moving, sometimes squiggly lines, he saw two continuous and fluttering motions side-by-side. Two heartbeats. Two babies.
His babies.
His hand rested on the side of the cushioned table as he ducked in for a closer look. There was no refuting what the doctor said. A hand came down on his and squeezed his. He looked into the face of the woman, his wife, his love. She smiled down at him, a rare moment of calmness.
"She's going to let us hear the heartbeats."
Vincent stood back up and clasped the hand in his. He slowly moved his way around the table, maneuvering her arm so that he could remain attached to her. He came to stand behind the table as the doctor prepared the sound equipment. The silence was good and electric. The young woman's anticipation was wearing short. There would be a burst soon if the doctor didn't hurry. Of course, having worked with this particular couple before, the doctor had everything up and running in no time.
At first all he heard was squelching, warbling noises. As the doctor moved the device along the pregnant belly towards where the developing babies were, Vincent picked up on something. With his hearing, he no doubt heard them before the two women. When the doctor announced that she had located the heartbeats a moment later, the young woman froze for all she was worth and strained her hearing. It wasn't long before she discerned the fluttering beats from the rest of the natural noises her body made. Vincent looked down and watched as a wide grin spread across her face. She looked up at him with her wide, dark eyes.
"Do you hear them, Vincent? Do you?" she asked excitedly.
Vincent gave her a small nod and smiled down at her.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
Certainly, he wasn't sure if he would be ready for two babies. Twins. His wife was energetic enough for three people combined. But seeing the look on her face, the happiness, the glowing, there was no way he could ever regret it.
He bent over her and kissed her lips softly before saying, "Yes, Yuffie. It is."
