Bonjour mes amis! This was inspired in part by the song 'Ain't No Rest for the Wicked' by Cage the Elephant. I'm trying to cure a serious case of writer's block, so these little stories will probably be showing up a lot. Just warning you!

When River was young, someone had asked her why she led her life the way she did.

River hadn't answered, instead choosing to shoot down the door and run before anyone else had realized the crown jewels of Opethido were no longer in their place.

The question had haunted her, though, for a very long time. For most of her life, River had blamed the people who had raised her, the ones that had taught little Melody to grow up a killer and a theif. For the most part, this was true. But River realized that it wasn't completely.

She could have stopped anytime she wanted to.

When she had escaped, and joined the Pond's as Mels, she could have learned to live the way Amy did, not carefully, but at least legally.

When she had gone to University, and begun to study hard so she could find the Doctor, she could have taken it all the way and joined societies and study groups.

Even when she was in Stormcage, she could have, as they put it, 'reformed.' That was common, even among the most hardened of criminals.

But she hadn't, and River was quite sure she never would.

Reviews are love.
