This is a crossover between Bambi and the Naruto fanfic Dreaming of Sunshine, but you don't really need to have read or watched either.
When I realized I had been reborn as a doe, I spent thirty seconds on the ground, lamenting my life. Because… deer. Much as I love deer, there are undeniable advantages to being a human.
Then I got up, ready to start my life as a common beast.
"Oh look, she's already standing!"
"And she's not even unsteady! She's a fast one alright. What'll you call her, Akka?"
Unless I was completely wrong, the ones speaking were those blue birds whizzing around my head.
"Oh, I, hadn't thought of a name yet," my doe mother said, looking a little abashed. "I think, oh dear. Rinni, Ranna, Ronno- oh! That is a good name, I'll call my son that." She licked the little fawn still lying by her side.
Yep, the animals were definitely talking.
"As for my daughter, ummm, Fonno, Bonnobo, Honnobacill-"
"My name is Shikako," I said, interrupting her.
"Okay, here's the plan," I said. Well, bleated. I was a fawn after all. "We're heading down river until we find a human settlement."
Mother Akka was understandably rather shocked. "You must have misunderstood me. I said, men are dangerous. They bring dogs and a strange lightening that kills. You must run immediately if you see a man!"
"Only the hunter is dangerous. If we approach the right humans, we can get help… The 'strange lightening that kills' is a gun, by the way, and that's a good sign. It means they're technologically advanced."
Mother Akka went a bit cross-eyed as I spoke. She may have been a highly intelligent deer, but I was clearly taxing her powers of comprehension. "Help? What help could men possibly be? And we don't need help, it's not winter, we're not hungry, life is perfect."
"The humans can treat us when we get sick. They've got antibiotics and doctors, and they'll definitely be able to cure your cough."
"Oh, you don't need to worry about my cough," she said and coughed. This time though, it sounded like she was coughing on purpose, and she stopped when something flew out. It took me a second to realize that it was not a giant booger. "This is a nasal bot worm. I've got a lot of them in my nose. It's really annoying, but it's not gonna kill me. Almost everyone I know have it, and they're doing fine."
Words cannot express how horrified I was. "We're finding some humans as fast as possible."
Ronno's head swiveled between us as we argued. The poor kid still didn't understand half of what I said.
"No, no!" Akka said. "I don't know where you got these ideas from, my strange little Shikako, but men are dangerous."
"Well, I'm going, and if you don't follow me, I guess I'll just go alone." I was betting she would follow me though. Akka was a very caring mother, who liked to keep Ronno and I close at all times. If she didn't, that was fine too, though. The most important thing was establishing communication between humans and animals, and once that was in place, it should be the easiest thing in the world to eradicate nasal bot worms.
