Greater Love

by Isable Chase

Blood flows freely, thickly through his fingers,

dark rivulets make liquid trails over his hands,

pooling on the stony ground below.

It was worth it.

His brother is alive

It was worth it

Clear blue sky, beautiful as it diminishes, darkening

As his vision dims, life and breath slipping away.

A beloved face appears before his vacant eyes.

It was worth it.

His brother is breathing.

It was worth it.

He whispers a final, slurred farewell.

Pleading sobs and strong arms surround him.

He longs to stay, to live, but a lion's roar calls him home.

It was worth it.

His brother is everything.

It was worth it.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
