Hans Island.
The island that was the source of Canada's problems with Denmark.
It was worth nothing, really. Just a barren, flat hunk of rock in the middle of the ocean, almost exactly halfway between their countries.
For some reason, though, Matthew Williams and Mathias Køhler just couldn't let it go. They both wanted that stupid hunk of rock for some godforsaken reason and either of them wanted to give it up. They were good friends despite this, though occasionally one of them would remember it and then they'd glare at the other at meetings.
Every few months, Canada or Denmark visited the island. It was hard to predict the visiting habits of the other country, but they did their best.
Matthew cursed when he visited after a meeting one day, once again finding Denmark's flag and a bottle of Danish schnapps sitting next to it. He angrily jerked it out of the rock and stuck his flag in. He considered the whiskey for a moment before taking it, like he always did. It was good stuff, and he could use it for celebration of once again taking the island. One of his men had put the usual bottle of Canadian whiskey down, while wondering if this was really worth it.
It seemed like the fight would never end, but Canada would always celebrate like it was the last time he'd ever have to re-claim the island.
Mathias, on the other hand, merely laughed when he saw Canada's flag. Taking the island back was always so easy, because Matthew never wanted to actually fight. He smirked, knowing the other took the schnapps every time. Well, he took the Canadian whiskey, too, but hey, he liked being drunk! He could easily drink Matthew under the table.
He replaced the flag and placed a new bottle of schnapps down, sharing the Canadian whiskey with his men as they made their way back home. Celebration was required, of course, after yet another re-claim.
The cycle would repeat in a few months, as usual. Canada would come, a few months later, so would Denmark. It was inevitable.
Both countries wondered if they'd ever reach a conclusion to this, though.
Perhaps when the island sank into the ocean and disappeared forever.
