Disclaimer: None of the characters are mine...
A/N: Just a short little ficlet with a bit of spoiler based on the final ova (seisohen is not really my fav fic, since they ended up killing Kenshin but it is a supply of possible ficlets -- if anyone would like to drop off little ideas/challenges)
A Mother's Tears
Lighting flashed across the gloomy night sky, followed soon after by the rumble of distant thunder as the force of the howling wind began to pick up its volume.
Bolting straight up, sapphire blue eyes blinked past the light fog of sleep that clung to her as she wondered for a moment what it was that had woken her. A soft whimpering sound, barely discernable amidst the incoming thunderstorm caught her ears just as the instinctive protectiveness of a mother within her welled up. Quicker than her husband's legendary speed, she was out of her futon and into her son's room just in time to hear him screaming for her in a voice laden with terror as his nightmares caught hold of him.
Picking her little boy up, she cradled his trembling form to her chest. Hushing and rocking him in a familiar gentle motion to calm his fears while one hand lovingly wiped away the tears that had rolled down his cheeks. Tiny hands that had fisted tightly onto her sleeping yukata slowly began to loosen as his whimpers gave way to the even breaths of sleep. Assured that he was soundly off in dreamland, Kaoru allowed the tears that she had been holding back to slide silently into the silky red hair of her two year old.
She could still remember the first time her precious baby boy had woken up from a nightmare screaming on top of his lungs for his Otousan to save him and the look of utter dejection on his innocent face when he found out that his hero wasn't there.
Over the months, Kenji's screams for only his Otousan had turn into screams for both his parents and tonight, he had stop looking for his father. His earlier whimpers of "Otousan don't want Kenji" had been slightly muffled but she had heard them nonetheless causing her heart that was so full of love for both red heads to break as she cried for her son who would never fully understand how much his father truly adored him and for Kenshin whose guilt for the lives he had taken during the Bakumatsu had caused him to continue his wandering, costing him the little bits of everyday joy that would come from watching his son grow.
