The Lucky Ones

Lily saw James more now that they were out of Hogwarts. She kept on running into him. Whether it was a mission for the Order or him needing to be put back together after a particularly gruesome battle. She was getting to know him better now. She was seeing a more grown up version of him.

James had changed. His arrogance and ego had lessoned due to the war. He still played pranks but they were few and far between. The pranks that he did play were on his friends and could be considered harmless.

Lily had changed. She learned to help only those who asked for it or needed help but couldn't ask. She no longer felt it her duty to deflate egos. She laughed at the pranks James and the others played. These were dark times and she knew that she needed to laugh when she could.

Both of them had roles to play. James was an auror. Lily was a healer. Both were members of the Order of the Phoenix.

Neither had a steady boyfriend or girlfriend. It was too difficult dealing with a significant other, work and the Order. When they did date, it tended to be someone from work or the Order, though these dates never seemed to go very far.

Neither wanted to admit there was a reason for their singleness. Neither wanted to admit that they were, in fact, in love with the other. Both knew how dangerous that was. Both realized that if the Dark Lord knew of their love, the other would be in danger. Neither wanted the other to die because of them. Both were trying to protect the other.

Neither realized that their friends were trying to get them to see reason. That they were hurting themselves more by trying to protect.

Neither would admit that they were only half living. That their lives were shallow and they just went through the motions of living each day.

Neither realized that they were fighting this fight for the other.

Neither would admit that they were crying themselves to sleep. That they waiting every day, longing just to see the other's face.

Neither would admit their feelings until forced to.

Neither wanted to stop pretending but both agreed that it was what they needed.

Both agreed that they belonged together even if they only had each other for a short time.

Both agreed that they were the lucky ones. They were the ones who had found true love.

::Disclaimer:: I don't own any of the Harry Potter universe. If I did I would be a very happy girl indeed. But it all belongs to JK Rowling. Not me, JK Rowling. Got that? Good.

A/N: I wrote this fic while listening to Bif Naked - Lucky Ones. It is a very good song and if you have it, I would suggest listening to it while reading. If you don't have it, don't worry.

A/N 2: This is not part of Lily's Diary. I don't plan on using it as part of Lily's Diary either. Although if it should happen well... I honestly haven't yet planned that far ahead... Oh well.

A/N 3: Edited for a review from Scision. You were right. Those lines had reversed themselves on me. Blame it on my dyslexia. Usually only mixing up words when I read now it has grown to mixing up full sentences when I write.
