I haven't written a Twilight Princess fanfiction in a while. But after playing the ending recently, I had the itch to write one. This is a Link x Midna pairing, but seen through a completely separate pair of eyes.

Hope you like. :)

Disclaimer: Legend of Zelda and its characters aren't owned by me. I only own the nameless OC in this fanfiction.

Out Of Reach

He had everything he could ever want. A title, a thriving land and populace, peace and a lovely wife. He would have never expected such an outcome a few years ago, during the dark times, the times no one liked to remember.

However, despite all this luxury and contentment, he wasn't happy. His feelings, his heart lie unrequited. They were good friends, companions, their lovemaking was tender or sharp. It all depended upon his lady's mood.

It always depended on her. His whole world was set up around her, her temper and her smiles, her tears and her wrath. Every bone in his body, his nerves and organs were owned by her. Her whispery secrets and stains tainted his entire being. A taint he would never want, or try, to remove.

No matter how he catered to her, no matter how good of a man he was, how noble or brave or cunning, he could never compare. He would never ever compare to the other male who had won the prize. The prize he wanted but hadn't had a chance to get. He didn't even have a chance to try.

His lady's heart. He imagined what it would look like in his hands when he lay his ear against her sternum. It would be a gnarled, glittering object. It always beat with sharp rhythms beneath her breast, as defiant and loud as she was. He imagined that it throbbed a wretched black with their blood, its veins a glowing abysmal blue. The cracks that marred its surface a sickly purple.

Yes, that is what it would be like. It was what he dreamed of and coveted, owning that heart. Knowing that every smile and gasp was made just for him, the glinting of her smirk and her devious ways all catered to him. Wishing that the roles were reversed or equaled, that his devotion would be mirrored in her.

But wishes were fickle things. He knew that this wish would never come true. A manboybeast had ripped his lady's heart from her chest. He gnashed it in his jaws and swallowed it whole, smilinghowling in victory as he saved his and her worlds.

His only satisfaction was that she left on her own accord, that the connection had been destroyed. He hoped that his pain was felt by his saviorrival. He hoped the blue eyed beast ached with his pain and hoped his heart was as crushed and oozing as his.

He watched his lady gain that far off look in her eyes, staring out their window. Past the hazy sky and black shards, past their dark purple curtains and past their horizon. Far past where he could see or ever know. He bit back a snarl and merely watched her as she lost herself in memories, thoughts he would never reach or hear. Memories that would never reach the light of day.

Queen Midna was his wife in name only and the king of the Twili knew that painfully well.

The End
