Chapter 1
Commander Cody took in a long, deep breath. Go on the mission, they said. It'll be fun, they said. Just chasing after a certain escaped bounty hunter, again. No problem. Riiiiiiight. As per his amazingly good luck, nothing was ever that simple.
General Kenobi told him about the other Jedi that would be joining them beforehand, General Kya Noatak, aka 'The Blind Bandit'. Bandit, for her methods of looting Separatist ships for supplies, and blind...well, for blind, but she couldn't actually be blind, could she? General Kenobi also mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that this Jedi made Quinlan Vos look sane and considered kindling the only acceptable use for a rule book. Great. Just great.
They had been standing on one of the Jedi Temple's landing platforms, waiting for the general to arrive. Suddenly, a ship appeared, rapidly descending. As it touched the landing pad, a window in the cockpit rolled down and a pale blonde head poked out. "Get in losers! We're going hunting!" the head called.
"Nice to see you too, Kya," General Kenobi sighed, boarding with Cody and the rest of his squad.
As they entered the cockpit, a chair swiveled around. The woman occupying it was short, slim, and blonde, with her hair in a ponytail save for two pieces hanging out adorned with blue and silver beads. She wore furry boots, grey robes and leggings, and a furry jacket that looked like the skin of some dead animal. Her eyes were pale blue, with white pupils. "Obi-Wan!" she cried, springing out of her seat to hug him and, despite her short build, lifting him off the ground easily. "They didn't tell me we'd be working together!" she grinned, setting him down. "Who's your friend?"
Introductions were made all around as they set a course for Nal Hutta. "We have intelligence," General Kenobi explained, "that Cad Bane is hiding somewhere in the swamps of Nal Hutta. Fortunately we have this to help us out." He slid a small disk into the base of a holo projector.
"'This'?" General Noatak asked.
"Yeah," he gestured toward the projector, "this."
"Obi-Wan," Kya said, exasperated, "I can't see what 'this' is." She waved a hand in front of her face. "Blind, remember? B-L-I-N-D."
"Oops," he said, a little embarrassed, "sorry." General Noatak facepalmed.
The briefing continued for almost an hour. After the first forty-five minutes, even Cody was bored. Finally it was over. Now, even better, he got to listen to the two generals bicker like younglings over the finer points of their plan.
"Well maybe if you'd actually grow a pair and man up, we wouldn't have this problem!"
"Well maybe if you'd follow orders, this wouldn't be happening in the first place!"
"You know, I'm starting to think I'm not the blind one here!"
Commander Cody heaved a sigh. It was going to be a long flight.
