Sam held onto Gabriel, eyes scanning the room for anything he could use to stop the bleeding, ignoring the voice in the back of his mind telling him it was already too late.
Gabriel looked up into those big hazel eyes, seeing the fear, and sorrow trapped in them, a different kind of pain shot through him knowing it was him that caused the look on the hunters face. "I'm sorry Sam"
"Shhh, its okay, I got you. You have nothing to be sorry for" Sam said, using his spare hand to gently wipe away the lone tear that had fallen from the archangel.
Gabriel closed his eyes, trying his best to focus on the warmth of the hands gently holding him. "If I wasn't such a coward..." He tried to laugh, if only to lighten the mood, but this only resulted in a series of laboured breaths as the movement heightened the pain that was spreading around his body.
Sam could only watch the archangel struggle, knowing he could do nothing at this point to help him, so he just kept talking hoping to distract him, if even only a little, as he tried to keep it together for the sake of the man in his arms.
"You're not a coward. You are so brave, do you know why? Because you did it, you stopped running and stood up to your family."
Gabriel couldn't help but smile weakly. "Yeah...I guess I did. If only I could have lived through it"
Sam laughed at the joke, more out of grief than finding any actual humour in the words, because no, this couldn't be happening. Not now, not just when they... Sam shook his head in denial, holding Gabriel as close to him as possible. "Y-you're going to be fine, okay? Dean's going to call Cas, and he can-"
"Sam." Gabriel said, cutting him off, "You don't need to lie kiddo, not to me" He knew this was it, could feel how cold his vessel was becoming as the mixture of his blood and what little grace he had left, seeped from his body from where the angel blade had torn through him. But he was fighting it off as best as he could, he had-no, needed to say one last thing to man before him.
"Hay Sammy, I- I'm glad you came back"
"How could I leave you?"
Gabriel if could, would have cried. How? He should have been left on the floor to die alone, but then here comes Sam, this beautiful, strong, caring soul. It's more than he has the right to deserve.
But he could feel his body begin to burn, the fire scorching his insides was building up. It was now or never... "I've done a lot of bad things, as both a trickster and as an angel, but do you know what I regret most?" He gasped out, as a bright light slowly starting to surround him. "Not telling you sooner"
Sam frowned. "I don't under-"
Gabriel, using all of the strength he had left reached out, grabbing a hold of Sam's long hair, pulled him in close, cutting him off with a kiss.
He poured everything he had left in him into it until he could no longer hold on. He pulled back, looking one last time, at his most precious person. "Sam Winchester...I love you." Then closing his eyes, he let the pain and the light finally take over him, as he cried out.
Sam used to one of his arms to try and block the blinding white that filled the room. When it left he slowly lowered his arm and looked at the now still angel in his arms, the black streaks on the floor, the only trace of the now lost wings.
"Gabe..." He whispered.
Nothing
He was gone. But...no, this wasn't how it was meant to be. Surly this was all just another nightmare, it had to be!
"Gabriel?!" Sam shouted in despair, shaking the angle in his arms, as if to wake him up. Openly crying now, as he could no longer fight the tears he had been holding back.
"Gabriel, please don't leave me." He shouted, "I love you too damn it!"
Burring his face in the dead angel's hair, he told him softly once more, hoping that he would somehow hear him..."I love you Gabriel"
End.
