She was so nervous. The hall was filled with glittering lights and what felt like millions of faces were looking at her. Not just her though. Hermione was stood huddled with the rest of the new first years. Even in her wildest dreams Hermione had never been able to imagine the turn her life had taken. She'd gone from a dull routine with no real friends to this new thrilling world of magic; giving her a chance to make new friends. Trying to calm her nerves Hermione ran through all the information she knew about the sorting ceremony. It helped a little but as names started to get called the nerves flared up again.

Looking at the two boys from the train Hermione wondered about their pasts. Harry was similar to her having only just found out about his being a wizard. The ginger boy Hermione wasn't really sure about. He seemed fairly stupid but then it might just be nerves on his part and Hermione did tend to work a lot quicker than most and wrongly formed judgements quickly. The group around her slowly dwindled and Hermione tensed realising it was her turn next.

Walking across the stage she tried to keep her eyes focussed on the wooden stool upon which the worn sorting hat perched. Picking up the hat Hermione tried to be as gentle as possible weary of the hat's powers. Hermione had never felt as self conscious as she did now the stool warm beneath her and the students' gaze fixed on her. The hat was soft and leathery as she placed it on her head. She gasped as she heard the hat begin to talk to her. Thinking her answers back to it Hermione sighed thankful as it finally shouted out an answer.

'Gryffindor.'

A table filled with red and gold cheered as she made her way towards it. A pair of twins met her at the end of the table introducing themselves as Ron's older brothers. As one of the twin's took her hand leading her further down the table he winked and Hermione's heart fluttered. Maybe being a witch wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.
