The sound of a sword being unsheathed sounded in Elsa's ears. He was right behind her and she could sense him about to swing it down on her. But she didn't care. Her sister was dead. Because of her. Everyone she loved was dead. She had nothing to live for anymore.
She closed her eyes and whispered mentally, "I'm so sorry Anna. I love you"
The pain never came.
She opened her eyes in confusion and then saw it. A hand, frozen solid, nearly touching her shoulder. She looked up and her heart dropped to her stomach.
"Anna!" She cried, shooting upward. She moved around to look at her sister, a hand skyward to protect her sister. She stared into her eyes, multiple emotions swirling in the now frosty irises. Sadness, determination, fear.
"No, no" She whispered, softly cradling her ice cold face in her hands. "Please no" Tears streamed down her face and she could barely breath. It was her fault. Her fault.
There was a snarl behind her but before she could turn, she was shoved out of the way and landed hard on the ice. Her head slammed down on it and she saw stars.
When her vision cleared, she got up, fighting the urge to vomit and looked up in horror.
"No!" She screamed, her hand shooting forward to stop him. But it was too late.
Hans drove his sword into Anna's stomach and twisted. The ice splintered. Another twist and a shove of his foot and Anna began falling apart until she became nothing but pieces of ice.
Elsa screamed, her voice raw of grief and anger. The world around her spun and she couldn't defend herself as Hans came her way, sword lifted above his head, a wicked gleam in his dark eyes.
Someone was screaming.
Elsa shot up in her bed, her platinum blond hair loose of her braid sticking to her skin slick with cold sweat.
She looked around widely, her eyes scanning the darkness for Hans, ready to kill her. There was nothing.
She struggled to calm herself down and that's when she noticed the snow falling on her skin.
There was a knock on the door. "Elsa? Are you okay?"
Elsa opened her mouth but no words came out. She couldn't control her breathing.
"Elsa?" Silence. "Elsa! I'm coming in" The knob twisted and opened to reveal Anna in her nightgown, holding up a lantern.
She took a step forward and gasped as she nearly fell flat on her face. She looked down to see the entire floor was covered with ice.
Noticing Elsa couldn't control her powers at the moment, she decided not to say anything and took slow, cautious steps forward until she reached the bed.
She sat the lantern on the bedside table and finally got a good look at Elsa. Her heart broke at the sight.
Terrified and crying, Elsa was sitting up with her knees up against her chest.
"Elsa?" Anna whispered, laying a tentative hand on Elsa's arm. Elsa flinched but didn't pull away. "What's wrong?"
Elsa shook her head.
"Nightmare?"
A nod.
"Hans?"
Elsa broke down and Anna immediately pulled her into her arms.
"He killed you!" Elsa wailed. "You were ice and he killed you with his sword. Took you apart!"
"No he didn't" Anna whispered in her ear. She rubbed soothing circles on Elsa's back and pulled her closer, placing her head over her chest. "Do you hear that?"
Elsa calmed at the sound of the rhythmic thumping.
"That's my heart. It still beats. Beats for you Elsa"
Elsa took in a deep shuddering breath and closed her eyes. Anna fell back into the bed and took Elsa with her.
The two sisters lay there, curled up into each other, just listening to each other breaths. Elsa became content and her eyes closed. She nuzzled into Anna's warm neck and murmured, "Anna?"
"Yes Elsa?"
"I love you"
Anna pulled her in tighter. "I love you too"
