A/N: K, I've made some changes to this, because I was told that I'm not allowed to have song lyrics in my story... :: grumbles :: Anyway, this story was still inspired by a song: The Finale of the musical Pippin. And, unfortunately, I believe that the lyrics (and some of the story of Pippin) have an effect on how this piece is interpreted. So... Go here: http // www . lyrics-top . com / 227219-11834 / Finale / Pippin . html to read the lyrics (without the lovely little spaces!). The specific lyrics for this piece start at the second 'Think about the sun, Pippin' and end at the last 'Pippin, think about your life.' So... yeah! Enjoy!
Peregrin Took stood on top of the city of Minas Tirith and stared out at the rising sun of morning.
Pippin sat down on the ground and thought about everything that had happened during the War of the Ring so far. For a moment, he felt the joy of adventure he had at the beginning of the journey, the fear of being chased around Middle-Earth, the anger when he discovered that Frodo left for Mordor without him, and the pain – the horrible, piercing pain – of leaving Merry.
A tear fell from Pippin's eye and he whispered, "I've done nothing right, have I?"
In his mind, Pippin saw Merry standing before him, smiling. "Come on, Pip. This is your chance to do some good in the world! Don't let it pass you by."
Pippin stood up and looked down upon Minas Tirith, shining gloriously in the newly risen sunlight. The sight heartened him and he smiled through the tears still streaming down his face.
"You're right, Merry. I'm going to do something!"
Grinning from ear to ear, Pippin made his way to the citadel. Today, he was to wait on the Lord Denethor.
As he walked he thought of his life before the war: swimming in the Brandywine River, teasing Sam in his garden, and telling scary stories all night long in Farmer Maggot's barn while eating a bushel of mushrooms.
As Pippin stood outside the entrance to the citadel, he looked back to see the sun one last time before a day inside.
All he saw was darkness. Startled, Pippin looked around, wondering where the sun had gone. Then he remembered:
"It's been dark for days now," he whispered to himself. He ran to an edge and looked down on the city again. On the fields before the city was an immense army from Mordor.
"Of course. They got here last night."
Pippin walked back to the citadel and entered, wondering at how he had seen the sun in this dismal gloom.
The Lord Denethor sat in front of his son, Faramir, staring in silence. Then the men came and took Faramir away and Denethor went with them.
And Pippin finally knew what he could do to help…
