I wrote this forever ago. It was originally for a LighXL contest on Deviantart. The theme was 'Not to be'. Unfortunetly, I didn't win. I know there are lots of mistakes on here but I'm to lazy to go through and check. Haven't talked to my beta in forever.
Anyway, Enjoy a sad, sad Light and L fic!
"I love you!"
Those had been his exact words. L had been taken off guard at the time and hadn't had time to react before Light had kissed him. L could still feel it know: the exact pressure of lips on lips. L could still taste it: the slightly salty taste from Light's tears. L could still hear Light's soft words that he had spoken, "I love you."
Why had it turned out like this? Lawliet, the greatest detective in the world, could not understand it. Lawliet never did figure out if Light had really loved him or not. Light had looked so sincere when he had said it, those three simple words (which were not simple at all). But if Light was Kira, then he would had to have been a great actor so he would have been trying to get L's guard down long enough to kill him.
L honestly did not know what to think. Lawliet was baffled.
L had ignored Light's confession and had went back down stairs so there would be an audience in cae Light tried anything funny. But as the days had gone by - and Light hadn't tried anything since - Lawliet began to wonder if Light had really meant it. Then came that fateful day.
It had started out a day like any other. They took care of their detective duties all day long before finally heading up to bed. Light had stopped and asked L if he could say something that was on his mind. L, taking security measures, lead Light into a surveillanced room.
"I know you think I'm Kira," Light had begun. "So I know you won't take me seriously when I say, 'I love you.'" There it was again; that three word sentence. "But I want you to understand that I really do love you, so I won't mention it again until after we have caught both Kiras. Then when you know for sure that I'm not Kira, maybe you will take me seriously."
L was speechless. If Light was not going to bring it up again, then there would have been no point in him confessing in the first place if he was Kira. At the same time, he could just be saying that and would let something slip "accidentally" to catch him off guard. After more thought, L realized that no matter which was true, only time would tell would reveal the longstanding mystery.
More time had passed before they finally found a lead. Yotsuba had been the only company benefiting from the Kira killings. After many hours of hard work, the Japanese Task Force finally brought Higuichi to justice and apprehended the ultimate killing weapon, the death note.
Light had suddenly become secluded. He never talked to L any more. He just sat in his chair, thinking hard about Kira-knows-what. L had become anxious. Even though he had never completely believed Light, L had still found himself falling for the younger man. He wanted Light to say something. To ask if L would take him seriously now or not. But he could not start the conversation himself. It would make it too awkward.
So L patiently waited for the day that would never come.
No one had ever noticed the scrap of paper hidden inside a wristwatch. No one had ever read what had been written there in secret. No one but the person to whom the watch belonged, strapped on his wrist…in a pool of blood.
cookies to anyone who can figure out what exactly happened at the end
