Chapter 1-Piece of my heart

Bella Point of View

I reached into the glass case and then lifted the large ring towards Mrs. Newton's outstretched hands.

"How many carats is this one?" She asked, bringing it up close to her eye, pretending to know she had any idea on how to check for color, cut and clarity.

I held back a sigh and answered the woman. "That one is 1 and ΒΌ carats Mrs. Newton." I had been showing Mrs. Newton and Jessica Stanley engagement rings for the last two hours. When the two of them had walked into the jewelry store earlier that afternoon announcing Jessica's engagement to Mike Newton Bella had found it laughable.

Wasn't part of the proposal that the guy already had the ring? Apparently this was not the case anymore so I set out to help the two women find what Jessica wanted. She had gone to school for two years with the girl and now Jessica barely glanced at her, not that they were good friends back then but whatever happened to common courtesy?

"I like the 3 carat diamond the best." Jessica whined from next to Mrs. Newton. She looked up to Bella and gave a plastic smile. "Surely you can give a discount to an old high school friend?"

Remembering that I needed this job, I bit back the words I wanted to say and faked a smile of my own. "Sorry Jessica, were not allowed to give discounts except to immediate family. You can sign up for the stores credit card though; we are offering no interest for 12 months on any purchase over two thousand dollars."

The girl pouted, sticking out her bottom lip, Bella wanted to poke it with her pen and see if it would deflate. Instead she looked at the clock on the wall, only an hour till close. She took in a deep breath and looked back to Jessica.

"Why don't you think it over, talk with Mike and then come see my tomorrow. We also have some of the designs online, so you could show him."

"Silly Bella, why would I need Mikey's opinion? This is the ring that I will be wearing, not him. Besides, he is too important to the store to take time off and come here tomorrow. "Jessica said, pulling her bottom lip back in. "I want to see the 3 carat one again."

I walked over to the other display and pulled the solitaire out. It was a beautiful ring, bigger then something that Bella would ever want, but the setting was so simple it that it was enough to offset the huge rock.

Jessica slipped it on her finger and waved her hand around. Both her and Mrs. Newton oohed and ahhed over the ring again.

"Bella, I'm going to take off, I have to pick up the monster from daycare. " I turned to Angela and waved to her. Her and her husband Ben had a little boy named Henry. I had gone to school with both of them and was happy they were still together.

"Okay I'll see you tomorrow." I said. Wishing I was the one leaving. I looked at the clock again; the minute hand seemed to be stuck in place. I let my mind drift off. Tonight I would be seeing my closest friend, Alice and her boyfriend Jasper. It had been almost 3 years since I had last seen them. Our attempts to get together since I had been back had been foiled by work, and an impromptu trip to Italy for Alice and Jasper.

I moved back to Phoenix with my mother to go to college, and to get away from a relationship that ended in heartbreak. I majored in journalism, but that was not a hot market in Phoenix so a few months ago I had moved to Port Angeles. I was hoping to write about the local music scene but no one was hiring. Instead I had interviewed for a job here, at the Port Angles Jewelry Store, I had been hired on the spot and while it was helping to pay my bills I found it dull. It was the same thing over and over, engagement rings, and tennis bracelets for the newest mistress, earrings for a girls 16th birthday, the same stuff in slightly different styles, depending on how much one could afford.

Jessica's shrieking brought my out of my thoughts. She was jumping up and down, yelling into the phone. "Oh thank you baby, thank you. I love you, smooches" Mrs. Newton was standing closer to the door and was looking over a new collection that we had just gotten in.

Eww, I was glad I was so caught up in myself that I had not heard her on the phone this entire time. I could just imagine what she had promised Mike in order to get him to spend over ten thousand dollars on a ring.

"I'll take it." She said throwing me a Discover card. I rang the card through, not bothering to ask if they wanted a warranty, I just added it to the total.

"Do you want me to box it up or would you prefer to wear it out?" She looked at me like I had two heads.

"This is not a ring that you hide, Isabella. "

I just nodded and handed her the receipt and the card back, along with the credit card slip, which she signed and handed back to me. "Thank you for shopping with us, keep us in mind for your wedding band needs" I said as the two women walked out the door.

Thank god, they were gone. I bit down on my bottom lip as I tried to think of ways to kill the next half hour. My eyes landed on a post it-lost wording, called customer will be in today. Acct 14578. That customer had not come in, I wondered who it was. Everything was done, except actually locking the place up. I sat down in one of the chairs reserved for customers and leaned my head back.

Once I closed up shop I would have to head home and get dressed, rather let Alice dress me and then we would be going my favorite place for dinner.

At two minutes before 5 I grabbed my coat and entered the alarm code. I locked the door behind me and walked quickly to my car since it was starting to rain. I saw another car pull up and a tall man run up to the stores door and knock, I watched him getting back into his car. Oh well. He could come back tomorrow. We were closed.

I slid into the dark blue Audi, a present from Renee and Phil, turning down the radio and backing out of the parking lot. I saw a car pull up and a tall man run up to the stores door and knock, before kicking his foot into the air and getting back into his car. Oh well. He could come back tomorrow. We were closed.

The car handled well in the rain and in no time I was in front of my apartment building. I ran for cover from the rain, sending a prayer upwards that I wouldn't fall on my face. I might have gotten older but I was still as klutzy as when I was 12 years old.

I shook the rain off my jacket and flicked on the light to my small apartment. It might have been small but it was mine. I had tried moving in with Charlie when I came back but he seemed to have forgotten that I was no longer a teenager so I had quickly set out to find my own place. I had found this place right away; and I had signed a one year lease that day.

I pulled my hair from the bobby pins that held it in a bun and shook my head, letting my brown hair fall across my shoulders. It was already 5:30 I needed to hurry. Alice had said she would be here at 6, our reservations were for 7.

I whipped out my phone, sending a text to Alice.

In shower. Door unlocked.-B

I set my phone on the small table in the kitchen and kicked my ballet flats off. About the only thing that was worth anything in this place was the stereo in the living room. I walked over to turn it on, Theory of A Deadman coming from the speakers placed around the room.

The bathroom was only slightly bigger than my kitchen table, and I shrugged out of the black pencil skirt while also unbuttoning the white blouse I had worn. I turned on the water and stepped under the stream. Another plus for the apartment besides it being my own was that the water temperature and pressure were always perfect. I finished quickly and as I dried myself off with a towel I heard the front door slam shut.

"Hey Alice! I'll be out in a minute."

"Okay." She chimed back.

I wrapped my hair in a towel and walked into my bedroom only to find Alice standing in front of my closet, shoving shirts and skirts out of the way. Her short hair was spike and she wore a black dress that fit her petite frame perfectly.

"I missed you so much Ali, I'm glad we were able to finally get together."

"Me too Bella. You look great, ratty old towel and all." I laughed and she turned back to my closet.

"We need to go on a shopping trip girl, when was the last time you got any new clothes." She sounded horrified and I shrugged my shoulders. It had been a long time but shopping didn't interest me. "Well were going sometime this week."

"Sure."

She grabbed a dark blue v neck sweater and tossed it to me, along with a pair of jeans. I caught them and shuffled to my dresser for a bra and panties. I dressed and then held up a pair of blue ballet flats, my staple, for Alice's approval.

She grimaced but after looking at the rest of my shoes sighed and nodded. I slipped them on and unwrapped the towel from my hair.

"Hey, is Jasper here?"

"Oh yeah, he's in your living room, looking at your CD collection." She said. I brushed my hair trying to decide if I wanted to deal with blow drying it or if I would just mouse it and let it go. The stereo changed from rock to Janis Joplin and I sang along to Me and Bobby McGee as I let Alice put mouse in my hair and scrunch it so that it had a tousled look.

"You're making us late Alice." Jasper drawled from the living room. She rolled her eyes and we laughed together as we walked into the living room. I shut off the stereo and grabbed my purse before locking the apartment door. We all got into my car-since Alice's Porsche could only fit two.

Alice and I caught up on gossip while I drove, and Jasper pretended to be bored but we both knew it was an act, he enjoyed the gossip as much as we did. Alice's eyes bugged when I told her about Jessica Stanley and Mike Newton.

"I thought for sure he would wise up." She remarked.

"There's still a chance but with what I'm sure she offered him for that ring he's probably perfectly content in a world of blackmailed blow jobs."

We all snickered and I pulled up to Bella Italia. It was my favorite place to eat; they had the most outstanding Mushroom Ravioli. I actually hadn't eaten here since I had been back though.

The hostess showed us to a booth in the back and we all slid in.

"Alice why do we have this booth? It's just the three us." The table was set for six.

"Well, Emmett and Rosalie wanted to see you and then I felt bad since EdwardwastheresoIinvitedhim." She rushed through it so fast that I asked her to repeat the last part.

"I invited them?" she said as a question. I shook my head and was about to tell Alice just how I felt about Edward being here when our server, Rose and Emmett and Mr. Fuck Me Hair himself came up to the table. I pursed my lips together and said hello to Rose and Emmett, ignoring the Greek God standing before me.

"Rose, you look stunning, as usual." I squeaked out, my voice not working right since I felt green eyes boring into me. I ignored the coiling that I felt in my body and listened to Rosalie talk. She really did look amazing. Her long blonde hair was curled and her pale skin was just the right shade to compliment her eyes. I always felt insignificant whenever she walked into the room. Her body screamed sex.

"Thanks, you do to Hun, it feels like forever since we talked." she noted, raising her eyebrow at me. I had promised to call her numerous times over the last few years but it ended up being more like once every 6 months. She sat down across from me, crossing her long legs.

"Bella how are ya?" Emmett's voice boomed around the quiet restaurant.

"Good, still getting used to the constant rain, but I'm all settled in at my place and at my new job." I practically whispered the words. I secretly plotted revenge when he sat next to his wife, leaving Edward to take the seat next to me.

"Bella."

I gave him a tight smile and returned the greeting.

"Good evening, can I interest you in a bottle of 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, it pairs perfectly with our specials available tonight?"

I looked immediately around me, I had no idea what type of wine it was, and I tended to stick to beer or basic mixed drinks, only having Merlot when I did drink wine.

Edward spoke for the table, "No thank you, "Ill has 3 fingers of Glenfiddich 1937 and..." he paused looking at me, "I'll have a glass of Merlot, whichever you recommend is fine" I said to the waiter.

"Very good Miss, and for you?" He turned to Rose and then made his way around the rest of the table.

"So Bella, how long have you been back?" Edward asked, leaning in towards me. He seemed so casual, a complete 180 from what he had been like the last time I had seen him. That day he had been rabid, pure rage. My mouth went dry and I wished the waiter would hurry with our drinks.

His shirt sleeves were scrunched up now towards his elbows and I could see the colors that blended together. I could also see the piece that had completed the sleeve. It wasn't there when I left before. It was a red heart that actually looked like a puzzle, all put together except for one puzzle piece. Where the missing puzzle piece should have been was inked black. I wondered about the meaning of it but the waiter appeared with our drinks and after we ordered food the whole table was buzzing with easy banter.

There was enough going on that I could have politely ignored Edward all the way through dinner but just like when I was younger I was drawn to him. It was as if a magnetic force pulled us together. By the time we had all finished eating I realized that not only was I was on my 3rd glass of wine I was also a hell of a lot closer to Edward then I had been at the start of the night. When he reached across the table to grab the check from Emmett his arm brushed my chest and my body tightened. From the way Edward looked at me as he handed his credit card to the waiter I knew he had noticed. I felt my face heat up and I quickly reached for my purse-pretending to look for something important.

I felt dizzy but I wasn't sure if that was because of the wine or because of the James Dean look alike seated next to me. I blew out a puff of air.

"Jasper, can you drive my car? This wine has hit me hard."

"Aren't you coming with us? He answered. Apparently I had missed that everyone had decided to go to a bar down the street.

Alice was practically jumping out of her seat. "You have to come Bella, it won't be the same without you." She begged me. A half-drunk Alice was a begging Alice, and a loud Alice. Her voice sang out causing another table to look our way.

"Okay, okay." Alice did jump up then, and came over to hug me. We took that as our cue to leave and walked out of the restaurant.

"It's close enough that we can walk there." Edward announced. Everyone murmured there agreement, except for Alice who was arguing with Jasper over giving her a piggy back ride, and we walked the block and half to the bar. I was careful not to get to close to Edward and I silently cursed myself.

The one man that I had ever loved was the same man who had pushed me away, told me that he was a monster. I had listened and left but now here we were. I wondered if I would be strong enough to stay away from him and if he would be strong enough to stay away from me.

Well, there it is. Leave me your thoughts, I have great plans for this story and I hope you will stick with me. Chapter 2 is done; I am just working on editing so it should be up within the next couple days.
