Merlin watched as the branch above him swayed like a swinging arm in the cool scented breeze. He sighed in rare comfort and relaxed his tired body into the soft dirt. His shoeless feet enjoyed the pleasant sensation of the earth instead of the usual harsh flooring and his fingers ran along the delicate green shoots of grass in contentment.
Around him the silent protectors of the trees stood tall and strong. The closest ones bent inward, concealing the young man in a cave of leaves and bark. Inside the nest Merlin felt safe, but just in case he had put an easy spell of concealment around him, this caused passing people to see him as only a minor bank of ground.

Merlin thought the forest always looked the most beautiful at this time of year.

He shut his eyes and beneath the closed lids he could see the soft stripes of sunlight flickering. His shirt fabric kept the warmth to his chest and his ears tuned into the melodic hum of magic. He dozed and an hour later was aware of the breaking of twigs. He watched sleepily as two men strolled out and sat nearby to eat lunch. They spoke quietly and their voices were no bother to Merlin.

"...did you hear about the Kings manservant?" One said.

"Have I heard, did you say John? Of course I've heard. Everyone's heard. Saved his life the other day didn't he?"

"Pushed the royal out of an arrows path. Wouldn't mind having his quick eyes."

"I heard of him doing that once before. I don't know how he does it. Must have a talent for it. What was his name? Marlin?"

"Merlin I think. Strange name."

"Strange fella."

"But a good man no doubt. The kingdoms lucky to have him around that's for sure."

"That reminds me. Did you hear what's happening at the moment? There's apparently a mad witch who has declared revenge on the king..."

"That happens a lot, doesn't it?...remember when..."

Merlin dozed of again smiling to himself. It was nice to hear he was recognized, and for the other thing they said. Well, he could deal with that tomorrow.
