Mako stopped by the pharmacy on his way back from work. Instead of heading to the aisle with all the beer or razors and all that "manly" stuff he walked to the back of the store where the female products are. This was nothing new, he'd done this for Korra before. He was happy to help her. After they got back together he quickly found out that you will do anything for the person you're in love with. Anything.
Mako grabbed the box off the shelf and headed to the register. There was no line so Mako walked right up. A young man walked behind the register. Mako sat the box of tampons on the counter and pulled out his wallet. The cashier snickered loudly.
"Something funny?" Mako asked raising a brow.
"What, is that for your girlfriend?" He stupidly laughed.
Mako sighed and rolled his eyes. "Do you have a girlfriend? Or any sort of relationship with a girl?" Mako asked handing the money to him.
"Uh, no and no." He answered sheepishly.
Mako's patience was wearing thin with this man. "Well I do. And she trusts me enough to buy her freaking tampons, so if you are done with the stupid ass commentary I will be on my way."
With a face as white as a sheet, the man placed the box in a plastic bag and gave it to Mako.
"Have a goodnight." Mako tried to say without sarcasm but it managed to slip in there.
Walking out of the store, he muttered things to himself like "why are men such pigs, what's the big deal, that guy had no right, Korra better appreciate this."
Rain started to fall and he was still a block away from the apartment building. Mako pulled his collar up to his neck and walked with his head down against the rain. He was soaked when he got to the building. Water dripping from the brim of his hat, he began to walk up the stairs.
"Korra I'm home!" He called.
Korra came out from the back of the apartment. "You're dripping wet." She smiled and took off his wet hat.
"I picked up your request." He handed her the bag.
"You are the best." She pressed a kiss to his cheek.
Mako smiled. "You better appreciate this because I had to deal with a dumbass that probably still lives with his mother and walk through a storm to get those for you." He peeled his wet coat off. His clothes underneath were just as wet.
"I appreciate that you're not like all the other guys and you will do stuff like this for me." Korra said wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Well, you do anything when you in love." He kissed her nose.
"I'm the luckiest girl in all of Republic City aren't I?"
"Hell yeah you are!" Mako picked her up and spun her around there living room. Korra's giggles echoed throughout the apartment.
{Later that night}
Korra was curled up against Mako's chest with his arms wrapped around her. The rain tapped the window and the thunder echoed in the sky. In the dark of their room he could feel her chest moving up in down with every breath she took.
All Mako could think was "so this is peace." Really all this time that's what they've been fighting for; peace. After years of saving the world they finally found peace, not just for the rest of the world but for them too.
Mako got a glimpse of his arm when lightning cracked in the sky. The scars going up his arm told a story, as Korra would say. A story of selflessness, growth and love.
There is a reason why he always says that you will do anything for the one you're in love with; because those scars on his arm are proof of that.
