A Father's Love
The Dumbledore household was never quiet,If Kendra wasn't cooking and making noise in the patterns it will be Aberforth sneaking the goats in the house. If Percival wasn't playing with Ariana Albus would be heard dragging a very large book that he couldn't carry.
Percival Dumbledore is a very proud man who loves his family unconditionally. He loves his loving and beautiful wife and her look-alike,Ariana,Their little girl already at one year-old looks like a mini Kendra. He loves his abnormally intelligent five years-old son who always has his face buried in a book and his trouble-maker two years-old son who spends the whole day running on his feet until he tires himself out.
The only problem is that Percival doesn't know how to bond with his children,At least not all. He can play with little Ariana the whole day and smile widely very much that it hurts at her laughter. He can chase Aberforth all around the house until his stubborn son finally gives up and collapses in his father's waiting arms.
Really,It wasn't that hard. The one who he has trouble bonding with is Albus,His eldest and quiet son. Albus is always quite and calm,Never asking for anything. Not asking him,His father,To Kendra he always run into her arms willingly and start to read stories that he invented whenever she was putting him to sleep at night.
Percival wished he has the father-son relationship with Albus. But it seems that whenever Percival tries to talk to him,He just doesn't want it or he prefers to read than spend his time with his father. It isn't that he hadn't tried, really, Percival tried playing with him, Reading to him, And even sit down and hear his son read to him. But none of them worked.
Each time Albus looked at him as if he was looking at a stranger with a look of fear and hesitanty in his eyes Percival's heart broke and bled. He wanted Albus to act like a child, A happy and small child not this adult mind trapped in a small body.
As he heard the familiar sound of soft footsteps - Which belongs to Albus since Aberforth likes to run and stomp his feet around the house - He looked up to find Albus entering the living room where Percival had been sitting on the armchair dozing off in his thoughts.
"Do you need anything Albus?",Percival asked already on his feet,He saw every moment like this as a chance to get closer to Albus and he would not let go of any chance.
There was hesitanty in the child's eyes before he answered as softly and quietly as ever. "Yes Father,Have you seen Mama?",He asked avoiding Percival's eyes,Percival hated to know his son is wearing a look of uncertainty,As if they were a king and a servant. Hated to know that Albus would rather choose his mother than him,or that he favours Kendra over him.
"I think she went to buy groceries",He answered trying to hide his disappointment and sorrow with a calm voice. "Do you need her with anything important?"
It's another opportunity,Nothing bad will come out of it right?. Again,Percival hated the nervous and fearful look on his son's face.
"I was just...I just wanted her to read me a story but I can read it by myself",Albus answered his little fingers gripping the book tightly.
The Tales Of Beedle The Bard was written in a neat and gold handwriting at the cover of the book. Percival mentioned for Albus to come foward and Albus,Terrified and fearful,Walked steadily but slowly to his father.
"Yes Father?",The boy asked in a small and shaking voice,He wondered what he did to get his father angry. He is nervous and afraid and had already started to wish that he never asked. But the truth is He wants to talk to his father, To sleep in his arms like Ariana and play with him like Aberforth,But he didn't know how to ask him to.
It left him thinking that it's his father who doesn't want to bond with him,And it makes him feel unloved and unwanted by his own father. The subject always brought tears to his eyes,Luckily his mother knew and she always wiped his tears away and told him how loved and wanted he is in the house which leaves him happy and bright.
"Come here",Percival tried again sitting down on the armchair and mentioning for Albus to get closer. Albus, small and afraid,Obeyed and stood in front of his father while hugging his book close.
Percival could see how shaking his son is,So he did as his fatherly instincts told him to. Pick Albus up and place him gently on his lap so his head is laying on his chest.
He felt his son's surprise and his heart broke even more. Surely Albus knew how much he loves him right?
"What story would you like to hear?",Percival asked stroking his boy's silky and auburn hair and Albus relaxed against him. Not completely but comfortable enough,To Percival,It was a great process. Albus is finally opening up for him!
"The Tale Of The Three Brothers,Please",Albus asked politely,Percival nodded and opened the book to read...
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
By the time Percival finished the story Albus was leaning against him and holding his hand tightly. He hadn't noticed when he had held his hand but he didn't mind one bit. In fact,He was delighted that Albus chose to listen to him instead of waiting to his mother or reading it himself.
"Great story isn't Albus?",Percival asked closing the book gently and sitting it aside at the small table in the living room. It was dark outside,Kendra already came back him and saw them like this so she decided to leave them together. It was she who always told Percival to never lose hope and keep on trying.
Albus nodded slowly before he snuggled closer in his father's arms,Closer to the warmth and to safety. "Thank you",Albus said gratefully followed by a yawn. "Papa".
Percival felt his heart skip a beat. Papa. The word kept repeating itself in his head and the more it did the more it started to sink in. It had been quite a long time since Albus last called him papa,Maybe since he was three or two,But Percival loved the very sound of it.
And as he looked at his peacefully sleeping son,He could see him as a perfect and happy child and he hated himself for wishing Albus to be different.
His son may not be a small child with vast imagination,But he is a child with vast knowledge,And he will never want change anything about him.
'I will protect you Albus' Percival thought as he kissed Albus's auburn locks gently 'And make sure you feel loved and safe,I promise you my son'
