Martha packing her stuff because she found a great apartment. Kate is sad about it, maybe she cries too, because she love Martha and don't want her to leave..
Kate was sitting in the big comfy chair in Martha's room watching as she packed. She was folding various items of clothing as Martha packed up the last of her things. She was moving tomorrow; it had taken her a while, but she had found the perfect condo within walking distance of the Theater district. It was bright and airy and somehow, it was Martha to a tee. Rick was over there now, supervising the last of the painting and wallpapering.
Kate was happy for Martha, she truly was. Martha deserved this "second act". She had gotten amazing reviews for her performance in the play; there were even some rumors of a Tony nomination for her. And now she was leaving the loft for her very own place. It was perfect. And of course, Kate was happy that the loft was going to be home to one less adult. There had been quite a few moments when Martha had interrupted them that had been a bit embarrassing. (Truthfully, she had never expected to feel like that once she was married!)
So Kate couldn't understand why she wanted to cry. She knew she'd miss Martha; she had become such a loving presence in Kate's life over the last few years. Kate knew she would have never survived the months when Rick was missing without Martha's sturdy belief that Rick was coming back to them. And the hugs; there was nothing quite like a Martha Rodgers hug, Kate had discovered.
Maybe the sadness came from the fact that Kate and Rick had just discovered Kate was pregnant. They hadn't told anyone yet, but they were planning a big reveal sometime soon. And as happy as Kate was about being pregnant, she was scared. And she was missing her mother. So maybe she needed the extra love that Martha just seemed to give to her whenever she needed it. She needed Martha and her unconditional love. And she was a mother. She'd understand what Kate needed.
"Martha, I don't want you to go!" Kate wailed right before she burst into tears. "I need you here. Now more than ever – I'm pregnant!" Martha had stopped packing when Kate started talking and now she went over to her daughter-in-law.
"Oh, Katherine, that is lovely news," Martha said as she kissed Kate on the cheek. "And sweetheart, I am honored that you want me here. But you also know this is for the best. You and Richard will want to be just you for as long as you can be. When is the little one due?"
"Late March. I can't believe we're going to be parents! Martha, I'm so excited one minute and scared to death the next," Kate told her.
"That is totally natural," her mother-in-law told her. "If you weren't nervous, I'd be worried about you," Martha laughed. "You know all you have to do is pick up the phone. I will always be available to you. And I know I'm not your mother, but I was once a scared to death pregnant lady. You can tell me anything and I will never judge you. And never hold back on complaining about my son. I love him dearly, but sometimes Richard needs to be put in his place," Martha smiled at Kate as she giggled.
"Thank you, Martha. Thank you for being there for me ever since I met you. Now let's finish this packing so you can move into that perfect apartment tomorrow," Kate said as she hugged her mother-in-law.
Her family may not be normal, Kate thought, but right now, she wouldn't trade in any of them. They might not be perfect, but they were perfect for her.
