The Reaper

.

When wishes wane and fade away,

When night consumes the dismal day,

When the moon is full and the night is new,

The Reaper creeps amidst the gloom.

Where he flies the world grows dark,

On sorry hearts his icy mark,

For one day you shall see him too,

When The Reaper comes for you.

.

.

His cloak is black – black as the night. His eyes are dull as a misty morn. His scythe shines sleek and sordid in the in the light of the moon and, carried by the howling wind, he hears their voices crying out into the night — hears their anguish and their heartbreak and their pleas ring out upon the wind.

And he finds them. Always he finds them.

In a blur he flies — as a spirit he soars. Dark is his cloak as he glides across the sky, drawn by the call of his name, his heart pulled towards their despondent souls.

He hones in on sorrow as a crow to carrion and, though the night is black and his form a blur… He finds them.

.

In the light of the moon The Reaper comes.

.

Their voices are shrill as he nears. Their cries ring higher into the sky. Their tremble and quake and they fear his shadow as it falls across the ground, the 'X' on their shells stark amidst the gloom. His eyes gleam blue. His face is devoid of mercy. Their purple haze enshrouds him as a winter fog and yet still he strides towards them, raises his scythe towards the sky—

"Useless!"

—for he harvests dreams; he takes their hand, leads them towards the darkness — towards the impending oblivion.

He is their doom — their destruction. He is that figure to whom dreams turn to die.

"Useless! Useless!"

A puff of smoke. A burst of violet sparks…

His voice is as chilling as a midnight frost;

"It is done."

And The Reaper turns to face the rising moon, the shadows falling about him, the shimmer of dream dust still trailing in his wake.

A/N: This is one of my weirder one-shots, but I was struck with inspiration halfway through writing one of my last angsty Ikuto-shots - 'wishes on the wind' - and decided I absolutely had to make something out of it. I'm such a sucker for imagery.

I feel like I should apologise for the opening poem though. I just needed to practice my poetry. I have upcoming ideas that require it.

But still, I hope you were at least intrigued by this weird little one-shot. Thanks for reading!
