To Blue Fairy I Pray

:.

Outside the bedroom door of the Cat's Eye Cafe, Fay watches the children sleep.

Hand in hand, gentle breaths. A little princess, her eager knight.

The moonlight dances on their hair and they glow. Like porcelain dolls. Like angels.

Fay knows he shouldn't, but he's already falling in love with them.

Punishment well mete, he thinks, because wicked men like him deserve the guilt. For what he's done. For what he will do. For what he won't.

Had Fay been a stronger man, he would have been enraged that Fei Wong Reed would create these lives only to dispose of them. But he's not, and having been cast away like trash himself, his heart can only ache for these children.

They aren't who they say they are, they aren't who they think they are, and yet, their eyes are so honest and their spirits so pure. And their hearts, copied or not, are their own.

They really are good kids.

His brother's haunted face looms from his memory and clouds his vision.

You promised it whispers.

I know.

Fay turns away.
