Prologue
It was late in the night and the small town was dark, not even the stars showed and the moon was hidden by an eerie fog. The only bit of comforting light the town offered was the light from an old lamp post, flickering weakly above her.
As Donia sped up the frigid air felt even colder, but as a winter girl at least she was more than used to that.
When she thought she was close she slowed, walking slowly down each street, scanning the addresses; the only noise that could be heard was the sound of her own footsteps and the winter queen's staff hitting the concrete.
She heard Beira's voice in her mind; It's not interference if you just happen to steal my staff...
Donia didn't even need to look at the addresses to realize when she arrived at Aislinn's home; the iron cross on the door had started making her nauseous four houses before.
Killing Aislinn Donia wouldn't need any help with, now getting into the iron den she called her home was a different matter altogether. Her body was aching so fiercely she could barely move by the time she reached the door. With the last of her strength she jammed the winter staff hard into the door, the extra cold Beira had lent her poured out of it. The door freezing so completely it shattered when she tried to remove the winter staff.
She stumbled over the rubble and into Aislinn's home.
Unfortunately Aislinn's grandmother had gotten up to get a drink of water, so she had to kill her before she had had the chance to scream. She had the mercy to do it quickly, though, she just threw the old woman against the ground and crushed her skull with the winter staff.
She stepped over the body and to the the stairs, she walked up them slowly until she had finally reached her destination, Aislinn's room.
Aislinn was fast asleep in her bed, not even slightly bothered by the presence of a faery in her room as she faltered over to her.
Donia stood there, watching her snore and mumble peacefully in her dreams.
She lent the winter queen's staff against the the bed frame and bent down to give Aislinn the deadly winter's kiss, but she stopped halfway, sighing.
"I can't do it," she whispered, "I can't take an innocent life, not even to save my own."
She grabbed the winter queen's staff and was about to walk out when she caught sight of herself in the mirror on the wall.
She stopped, Look at yourself, your a monster, your eyes are like looking into an oil slick, your hair is like snow, and you can never touch a bird without killing it... You can never kiss the man you love without burning yourself up... Who did this to you?
She clenched her fists so tightly her nails sliced into her palms because her skin was so thin now.
"Keenan," she muttered. You gave him your body, heart and soul and did he do in return? He stole your mortality and gave you the choice of being one of his harem girls or take the one in a million chance of actually being his queen and not Beira's new slave.
He loves me...
If he loved you he would have left you alone, he wouldn't have forced you to make that decision. He used you and when you weren't the one he was looking for... She closed her eyes and remembered the night she first taken up the staff she now held in her hand up for the first time. It was worn with the touches of the women who'd taken it up before her, but she tried not to think about them. She just hoped and prayed that she would be the one who would be with Keenan forever.
Keenan stood behind her, his skin glowing like hot coals, if she really was the one destined to be with him he would remain this way forever, but, she wasn't. When she took up the staff the chill filled her as it did all the women who'd taken this risk before her. She fell to the ground as the ice punctured her body.
She cried out to him, "Keenan!"
But he didn't answer, no longer glowing or even looking at her. He walked away without a sound. - he left you for dead.
Donia stepped away from the mirror and back over to Aislinn.
And he'd do the same to her if she wasn't the one he was looking for.
"But she is."
So she'll be trapped with Keenan forever no matter what she does, and that selfish bastard will get everything he always wanted while you weep in silence as a shade. Trust me, no one deserves the fate of being trapped with Keenan forever. If you kill her now she'll die and go to heaven like everyone should have a chance to do..
Aislinn stirred slightly in her sleep, the chill air from Donia's body must have woken her.
"Donia? Why are you-"
This was Donia's only chance, she grabbed Aislinn by the sides of her head and forced her lips into her own, blowing the winter chill into her while she struggled. Donia didn't pull away until Aislinn went totally limp. She released her and she fell hard to the bed, eyes frozen into a terrified expression, laying in a pool of cold water and her own blood.
"You destroyed my life Keenan, now I've returned the favor."
She left the house, smirking coldly, the summer court would never recover from this, and neither would Keenan.
