Lounging
He looked around the room, seeking a familiar face and smirked when he find who he was looking for. Sirius was lounged on a sofa, reading a transcript of what was probably the essay they had gotten earlier that week in detention.
A few fourth-year girls were staring at him intently, seemingly documenting his every move, whispering amongst themselves as the handsome boy in the sofa was dragging the feather of a quill against his cheek. James rolled his eyes as one of the girls squealed. James flung himself on another sofa opposite Sirius as the girls threw a few adoring looks at him as well. "Sirius?" the boy in question showed of a big grin.
"Finished practice early, ay?" he asked and James nodded and stretched his arms up in the air. Sirius returned to the transcript glaring at it like the homework was making a fool out of him. He could not afford not doing it, remembering professor McGonagall's icy look and warning. "Think of this as an end of the year finish, Mr. Black." She had told him. Wasn't the O. ' enough?
"Mate, you're oblivious." James laughed and Sirius looked up raising an eyebrow and dragging a hand through his dark hair. James looked over at the girls in the far-off corner again as he heard them giggle and he rolled his eyes so hard it hurt.
"Still not sure why you don't just ask Tina out, she's very cute." James said as he looked over at the curvy, Gryffindor brunette who was the obvious pretty girl in the group. She accidentally made eye contact with him and quickly looked down and mouthed "Merlin's beard" as the others girls' giggles turned into laughter.
Sirius looked over at them just in time for Tina to turn scarlet red.
"You know I don't like desperation, and she reeks of it." Sirius explained sneering. "I'm sure she wouldn't mind going out with you though Prongs, if you find her so adorable." James was glad the girls could not hear them, Sirius could be cruel and blunt sometimes, not unlike James himself. He was too tired to break hearts tonight.
"You know I got other things on my mind…" James muttered.
Sirius broke out into a barking laughter. "Lily's a thing now is she Prongs? That's not very romantic; she's not just an object you know." He said cheekily, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
"Oh fuck off," James hissed and threw a pillow at Sirius, who chuckled.
"You fuck off I'm trying to concentrate here." He returned to his essay and left James staring into the fire, turning away as the flames reminded him of wavy red hair blowing in the wind. He groaned demonstratively, wanting desperately for his friend to pay attention. He knew Sirius was sick of his Lily-whining, but he needed reassurance, "common Padfoot."
Finally Sirius looked up and put the paper aside, and the look in his eye was softer this time, less mischievous. "You alright mate?" he asked, some concern in his voice.
"Yeah, well you know. I was thinking about asking her out, maybe to Hogsmeade or something before summer, if I could only talk to her alone. If she could just stop snubbing me and actually listen for a second… What do you think?" He looked up at Sirius looking annoyed at the subject in hand, but he could always count on Sirius to at least try to be helpful.
"I think maybe you should wait a while. Last week she told you she would rather date the giant squid instead of you. Just ease up on her, give her space. I mean it's working fine for me. Exhibit A." Sirius snickered, nodding casually to the table where the girls now had started taking turn looking at them lounging in the sofas. James burst into laughter and the girls' ears perked up.
"Yeah maybe your right, I can't wait forever though." He sighed.
"So enjoy yourself some more while waiting, why don't you? Tina seems about ready to do anything." Sirius said smiling wryly. James laughed again, carefully looking over at Tina. "Maybe…" he thought, but she was no Lily Evans.
