I first saw him along the beach at low tide on a warm summer morning. I had been lying on the sand when some sixth sense told me that someone was watching. I sat up and my eyes locked onto cold gray ones and I felt a shiver run up my spine. He turned away first and continued along the beach, studying the tide pools with an unnatural interest; almost as if he was looking for something. I scrambled to my feet, but did not approach him, nor did I run. I merely stood there and watched as intensely as he surely had been watching me earlier. He seemed to know of my gaze, but did not do or say anything; almost as if he was used to it. He merely continued walking, watching the seagulls soaring with a sort of longer. I wrenched my gaze from him only for my eyes to lock onto a shining bird swooping over the water. A swan.(1) The man's eyes followed the bird until it disappeared into the clouds. His eyes turned to face the sun as it sunk below the horizon, painting the sky a blood red. The burning ball slipped below the skyline and the land began to darken, but not before I saw the man collapse onto the sand and lower his head. I had come to the beach to watch the sunset, but that now seemed completely pointless and trivial. I took a step towards where the man had been, but as my eyes ajusted to the darkness, I realized that the man was gone. I glanced around the beach, but he was nowhere to be seen. I turned to look at the now dark horizon, wondering what it was that the man had seen to make him so upset. I closed my eyes and - without turning or stepping away from the sea even though I could feel the water lapping my toes as the tide rolled in - whispered a silent prayer that the man would find what he sought - be it peace, family or something more. I prayed my heart out for him. I never saw him again.

A/N 1: The boats that the Noldor killed the Teleri for and Feanor and his host cross to Arda on are sometimes called 'swan boats' and are drawn with a swan figurehead. The reference to those is through the swan that Maglor and our unnamed character see. It would most likely remind Maglor of the first kinslaying and hence; all the others. As an added note, he looks toward Valinor: a place he has been forbidden to return to. It would be a reminder of what he's lost - both the empty horizon and the blood red sunset. That would cause him to weep in my angst filled mind. (And don't ask where he disappeared to. I don't know. It was just a plot mover. He probably just ran off while our unnamed character's eyes were adjusting. That's the best part about stories. People can disappear and they didn't even have to be there in the first place.)
