Chapter 1

My name is Celia fox, I am 15 years old, I live in a country called panem, and my home town is district 5 known for generating the power for the big city The Capitol. I stretch out to my side and feel only bed, my sister must have got scared and got in bed with our foster mother, my parents were killed by a nuclear power plant explosion years ago since then I got fostered by my best friend Jake martin's parents. I sneak out of the house with provisions like food and drink and Jake obviously I jump over the fence and help Jake carry the food over the fence. We get to the hollow log and Jake grabs his bow and arrow and then we are off running through the woods.

"Look what I caught" said Jake excitedly

"What?" I said then he showed me a piece of bread. Bread is a rarity in district 5 since most of us are poor and starving only the baker son gets bread and luxury while the rest of us are starving to death. "Where did you get that" I said "from the bakery I swapped it for a squirrel" Jake said

"Who with?"

"Who do you think?"

"The baker?"

"Yes"

"You must have been up bright and early to buy that" I said

It takes about 2 hours from the valley to the town so he must have been up at 5 in the morning to buy the bread.

After 4 hours of walking and hunting we came out of the woods with a feast for a king (a district 5 king that is). Right before we climb over the fence I hear the distinctive hum that means that the electricity is on. "Dam it we have to just sit and wait till it turns off" I said

"We can't the reaping is in 2 hours if we wait we will miss it, we just have to find a tree and jump" Jake said in frustration.

"Ok!"

So then we picked a nice ash that had long thick branches and we started climbing. Naturally I went first as I'm smaller so I will test out the branches. I got to the end and jumped. I felt the brief secession of falling then I hit the ground. Hard. Then Jake jumped his landing wasn't nearly as bad as mine was. As I stood up I frowned at the height of the tree it looked much taller than when we were stood on the other side of the fence. Jake always said that I only smile in the woods straight after I gave him the frown of his life. He laughed.

As we rush home I spot loads of families leaving their houses to go to the square were the reaping has been held for 73 years and now is about to be the 74th year. When we get home I take a quick bath and I see the most beautiful dress laid on my bed. "thank you so much mum"

"thats ok now get ready the reaping is in an hour.
