Every so often, David would look at the words on his forearm. Runnin'! It always annoyed him. Especially when it was early in the morning like today. What was that even supposed to mean? Was he going to ask someone what he should do for exercise and she'll tell him to run? David groaned and rolled out of bed, waking Les up as well. It was their first day working as newsies and they had to get there bright and early.
David got dressed and saw his dad at the table drinking coffee. He was used to getting up early for his own work and he couldn't quite shake that habit. "How're you feeling?" he asked David.
David shrugged. "I'm kind of nervous." Meyer just nodded. "Les, are you almost ready?"
Les didn't seem as tired as David did. "Yeah, just a minute!" he exclaimed with excitement.
Jack rarely paid attention to the words on his upper chest. They were stupid and he didn't want to get close to anyone. He knew no one would want to get close to him anyways. Watch it, willya? What do you think you're doing? Jack always rolled his eyes when he thought about them. He wondered what he'd be doing that annoyed her and why she would stick around.
Honestly, Jack wanted to meet them. He wanted to know what would be so different about her she'd stick with him. Or even be with him in the first place.
Jack never expected to meet them on his way to Newsies' Square that day. And he especially didn't expect his soulmate to be a boy. He was running from the Delancey's when he ran into a cute boy he'd never seen before with bright blue eyes and curly hair. "Watch it, willya? What do you think you're doing?" Jack heard those words and he couldn't believe his ears. It took him a little bit to realize he still hadn't answered.
"Runnin'!" he yelled as he continued to run off on his way, away from two guys chasing after him. David froze. Did he just-? No, that can't be right. that guy was, well, a guy! he thought. He knew he'd have to ask him what his words are. Obviously he can't be the only guy who says that their running.
Jack was trying to forget it happened. He knew it couldn't be right. "There's gotta be at least two people that say that to me," Jack said quietly to himself.
He decided to not bring it up at all that day. According to Jack, if he avoided it, it couldn't happen. Once he started bonding with David he knew he was in trouble.
The two were on the fire escape outside of David's apartment after dinner. "Jack, I gotta ask you something."
Jack lifted his head and raised an eyebrow. "What?"
David let out a sigh before he asked: "What do your words say?" Jack didn't respond. "You know, your soulmate's first-"
"I knew what you meant," Jack said, cutting David off. "I just didn't want to answer."
"Oh," David frowned in disappointment. No one spoke for a few moments. "Mine said 'Runnin' which, I was thinking-"
"Yeah. Mine said what you said." Jack was fighting to avoid David's gaze, which was hard considering he felt David's eyes staring at him. "So I guess this means we's…" Jack stopped, the word getting caught in his throat.
"Soulmates," David finished for him. "Something must be wrong."
Jack felt slightly offended. "What? Am I not good enough for you?"
"No!" David coughed. "No. You seem...you are nice. And easy on the eyes."
Jack laughed lightly. "Not so bad yourself."
They both knew that even if it was wrong, it was definitely right.
