Several people were busying themselves with mundane house chores. Adults were running rampant, children getting underfoot, and a few lazy young adults were lying about, chatting.
The Burrow was a lovely place this time of year. All of the Weasleys made it crucial to have the entire family, however extended, over for the holidays.
But Regulus Black didn't want to go to the Burrow, he thought fitfully as he sat in a lonely corridor, luggage at his side. The train would take him and Narcissa home soon, they'd meet Andromeda at the station and all Apparate back together. He was sure that Pads would like that.
Pads, of course, referred to the mottled gray tabby that languidly stretched out upon his lap. His parents had been very averse to him getting the feline – why couldn't he get a lovely owl like his sisters both did? He ignored their complaints, knowing why the animagi were both so against living with a cat. It was alright, though, he took Pads to Hogwarts, and as such his dad only ever sparred with the poor thing over the holidays and summer.
He used to, anyways. It had been four years since anything like that had happened.
"Quit mopin', will ya?" a soft voice shattered his melancholy, golden locks tickling his nose as his sister sat beside him. "It's like I said, Reg. They'll be home for Christmas this time. I'm sure of it."
The words echoed somberly in the hall. Narcissa Black had said the same thing only recently–
Not that recently, though, if you thought about it.
They, along with their friends and family, had been rudely taken through time due to James II's mishap. Of course, the timeturner he had found had been planted by nefarious sorts, so it wasn't entirely his fault.
He still got a hell of a scolding from his mother while his father watched on.
It had been hectic, the past. Twenty-five years ago, to be exact. Faced with the Order of the Phoenix as well as the even further past's Marauders. Not to mention his mum and uncle's child selves.
But everything had been resolved, and he knew that no one from the past remembered it. Everyone had been obliviated by Teddy right before they left.
No, it was only the future generation that bore the pain of memory.
The images of his parents, sarcastic and young, kept flashing across his mind.
Regulus raked his spindly fingers through his dark hair, Pads nuzzling his leg as bitter tears began to fall.
"I – I want to believe you, 'Cissa, I do, but – blimey, sis, these rubbish Healers have done nothing of use. Four years and hardly any improvement! I just – I wish Dad could lighten this mess up with some stupid joke."
"I wish he was here too," she replied, arm about his shoulders. Neither of them noticed the magic thickening in the air. "And Mum. She was the brightest witch of her time, I'm sure she'd be able to concoct some elixir to help. Hell," she murmured, a weak smile taking over her face, "if Uncle Remus was with her, it'd take only an hour, he was bloody brilliant!"
"Ha," Regulus laughed, a short bark of an exhale, "we've never even seen him! What if Mum and Dad are just embellishing stories? You've got a point, though, I wish we could've met him. Maybe he would've been able to help them."
They both froze when a Great Gray Owl swooped down upon Narcissa's luggage, giving an indignant hoot. Narcissa rose in a panic, "Little Lupin – oh, bollocks, Reg – we've got to be going, the train will leave soon! We've got to find James – you know he'll be loitering about!"
"Too true," Regulus grumbled, depositing Pads on the floor as he stood. "Remind me that if we don't find him shortly I'll give him a week's detention after break for being a stressor."
"Haha, I hope we find James soon then, for his sake!" Narcissa teased, already going to sprint down the hall, Hufflepuff robes billowing out behind her. Regulus took off as well, paying no heed to the heavy atmosphere of the hallway.
It, after all, was no special place. Not anymore.
Not since the Fiendfyre.
