"Scully?"
The voice was like a loud siren, coming to her from the muddled noises of the hospital. It sounded familiar, and the woman in question looked up, facing the sad eyes of the older man.
"What happened?" she whispered, already fearing the worst, yet knowing that it would be what she feared the most.
"He's gone."
Two simple words, yet they carried so much gravity in them. So much pain, fear, sadness. Those two words.
Scully bowed her head, not knowing if she should even ask. She had known the cost of him going there. Yet she did not know exactly who they wanted.
Well, now she got her answer, her mind retorted bitterly. What is she ever going to tell her mother? That Mulder bailed on her. Even thinking about it brought tears to her eyes. She knew all too well that it was for her safety that he left her in Washington, but she could not help the strong urge to cry and just let everything out.
Taking a deep breath, she looked at Skinner. She would go on, she had to. For the three of them.
"What happened?"
She watched silently as Skinner flinched. She watched quietly as he slowly began to speak. The words seemed to be coming from a great distance, sounding muffled. The image of Skinner was blurring, and she didn't know why, until she realised that she had been crying.
Now, her tears gone, her heart devoid of emotion, she closed her eyes, burrowing herself in the thin sheets of the hospital bed, regrets flowing through her mind.
One stood out though, a constant reminder of her failure, both as his lover and a doctor.
She had never told him and realised, that she was pregnant. And Dana Katherine Scully knew all too well that he would never had gone if he knew.
How was it?
