Author's Note: Written for my school newspaper's flash-fiction contest. prompt: flash-fiction - no more than 200 words.


''Choose.''

Words seemed to fail him as he silently fired the gun, and watched its body tremble, as if it was being electrocuted, before finally melting to the ground.

''He is one of us.''

''I wish to take you with me, I do, but how?''

She let out a giggle, before acting deep in thought. ''Surely I could fit in your bag!''

And so, after saying a brief goodbye, and letting out any last laughs, the man left for the airport.

''Excuse me, sir, I'm going to have to ask you to step aside; we need to check your bag.''

The guard hesitantly opened the bag, and gasped at what he found. All that could be heard was the man humming softly to himself; ''There lies my love, in pieces.''

''What on earth, would possess a person to do such a thing? The ropes were secure, the hooks were ready, the crew was sinking! We could have made it out of this heist alive!''

The guard bowed his head in shame, but could offer no reply.

Instantly, the first mate burst into the quarters with a look of pure terror on his face. ''The ship is sinking, Captain!''

''Checkmate.''
