"Even if you are the last… you are never alone."

His mother's wise words rang in his head as Superman took in the form of his sleeping son.

Aweek ago, he had returned to Earth desolate at being the last survivor of Krypton only to find his surrogate home planet in a complete mess. To make matters worse, the love of his life, Lois Lane, was engaged to another man. A man who could give her a house with a white picket fence, 2.5 kids and a dog. A man whom she shared a child with. To top that all off he was informed that a certain bald criminal mastermind had been set free because he had forgotten a certain critical court date.

Add that to babysitting the whole world, and life was pretty stressful for the big blue boy scout.

Two days ago, Superman was lying in a hospital bed, fighting for his life. Amazing what a sharp little stick of kryptonite could do. He remembered feeling lost in utter darkness, lost because there was no real enemy to fight. He remembered feeling completely useless; remembered slowly losing his grip on whatever version of reality he was in.

And all of a sudden, he heard an angel's voice. Lois' voice. Her words were a faint murmur, unintelligible. Superman's complete consciousness focused on this sweet sound. After what seemed like an eternity, he could finally make out what she was whispering.

"…Jason is your son."

A brief press of… something… against his lips, and his world returned to silence. And yet, a part of him knew now, that there was an enemy. And that was whatever was keeping him away from his son. Subconscious resolved, he began fighting.

Here he was. Today. Now. Leaning over his son's bed, he stared at Jason with a mix of awe and wonder. He suddenly felt like the weight of the world had shifted off his shoulders.

He might never be with Lois again. He might never know a woman's love. But he had this, at least. He had his son.

Sleeping, dreaming, unconscious of his destiny was Jason; Superman's legacy to the world.
