"He doesn't like you, Ren. You need to move on!" my supposed best friend
Ruby told me.
"I know, I know. But I can't stop thinking about him!"
"Think about all the times he's made fun of you and how he treats you!"
"It's all a joke, Ruby. And besides, he is so totally in love with you."
"What? That's ridiculous."
"You know it's true. He makes it a point to tell you how beautiful you are every day in Algebra. He barely acknowledges me!"
"I'm sorry."
"Yeah, well so am I. I'm sick and tired of being treated like I'm not there!"
We walked into math class. There he was, joking around and flirting like always. Of course, he came over to talk to Ruby. I sat down and pretended to be studying for the quiz we had that day. It was torture watching him flirt with her- and her flirting right back! Wasn't she supposed to be my best friend?
This went on for the rest of the week and by Friday afternoon I had had enough!
"What's wrong?" Bobby asked.
"Nothing."
"Whatever."
It was basically the only interaction we'd had for the week.
There was an all-school fun night that night and I didn't think I would go. However, at the last minute I put on my tightest tank top and my cutest jeans and set out for the school.
He was, of course, dancing with Ruby. Then Ruby went off with somebody and I was sitting in one of the squeaky folding chairs alone. Bobby sat next to me. A new hit slow song came on and I cringed. How awkward was this?? I can't sit next to him and not want with all my being to be dancing with him.
He looked at me. I looked at him, hopefully. He looked right past me at Ruby and I stormed out to the hallway. I sat down in a heap and started bawling. He walked out.
"Whoa, Ren. What's up?"
"Nothing, Bobby."
"You've been saying it was nothing all week. There's got to be something wrong."
"Isn't your wife waiting for you inside?" I asked coldly.
"My wife?"
"A.K.A my best friend."
"Ruby?"
"Wow, you're a quick one," I said sharply.
"There's no need to snap I didn't do anything wrong."
"Actually, you did, Bobby! But it doesn't matter. I'm sure Ruby needs a dance partner so go right ahead." I stormed out the back door into the chilling fall breeze. Bobby, surprisingly, followed me.
"What is wrong, Ren? Why are you acting so weird?"
"You want to know why? I'm sure Ruby has told you by now but I like you. Okay? And it is not as easy as you think to watch you play footsie with her every 5 minutes when you haven't even said Hi to me!"
"What?"
"You don't even know I'm there!"
"No, that's not true."
"It is true Bobby. Now I'm cold so I'm going back inside," I said.
"Wait! Here, if you're cold you can wear my sweatshirt."Regretfully, I slid the fabric over my head and it felt so good.
"Now, Ren, I wanted to wait until tonight to tell you this. I like you too! I've liked you for a while! I know you're mad at me but just answer this question before I go insane. Ren, will you be my girlfriend?"
I had not expected this. "Well, ok!" I said. He wrapped me in his arms and I knew that that was where I was meant to be.
