Slightly AU.
Me, I'm used to being tired and bloody,
but you believed that I could be somebody.

She was young, and innocent, waiting for somebody to come along and save her. He was ancient, and a little more than slightly bitter, looking for somebody to adore him. He found that in the seven-year old child who took a liking to the raggedy man who ate fish custard and never made any sense. And fourteen years later he found it again, in the young woman who still gazed admiringly at the man who showed her the past and the future, and galaxies light years away. He knew what would happen, what always happened in the end, but how could he resist the temptation of being adored, despite the blood on his hands? And there was so much blood, so many innocents dead, so many monsters slayed.
.
You put your world on hold for me,
gave away to follow failure through the fire.

Year after year she had anticipated the doctor, her doctor, taking her away in his big blue box, and never more than she had after his brief return to earth two years prior. And now, as he appeared just as he'd promised all those years ago, she didn't stop to think that she was getting married in the morning, or that it was wrong to be running off with another man. No, Amy Pond didn't think of either of those, because he was back, and in that moment nothing else mattered. She was going to travel though time and space, and there was nothing on this planet, or the next planet, or any other planet that could stop her. And when the sun rose the next morning, she was long gone, blindly following the doctor to places more terrifying than even the scariest of nightmares.
.
And I can, so I will,
And you'll see your hero come running,
over and over, tonight.
.
It was selfish of him, to keep dragging her on all of these amazing, dangerous places, constantly putting her in danger so that he could pull yet another tremendous rescue out of thin air. He knew how wrong it was, knew that he should take her home right now, this second, so she could live a safe life on earth. Well, as safe as she could be, because no matter where she was, something could always drop out of the sky with every intention of destroying the human race. Every time he'd promise himself that it would be the last, he'd take her home as soon as they returned to the tardis. But he knew better. He knew he wouldn't take her home unless she asked, that he'd continue travelling with the girl who'd adored him since she was seven. And try as he might, he couldn't explain why he kept her with him, except that he could keep her, so he would.
