Into The Game (Book 1): Outlast
*Quick Note - Some events and elements from the Outlast game will be different in this story. This won't be a 'perfect' retelling of the game, but honestly compared to the first Outlast/Arc-V crossover story I wrote I think this is much better. And yes, 'Into The Game' is a play on words of 'Into the Vrains' because it just sounded cool.*
Chapter 1: Yuto's Tomato Savior
The car jolted from one side to the other. Yuto hated dirt paths and for this reason specifically. As he drove his car's headlights hit a sign. In bold text it read -
Mount Massive Asylum
Yuto knew he was getting close to his place of interest. The front gate soon came into view. They were wide open, almost as if they were inviting him in. Yuto drove in and parked to the side. In front loomed a dark, stone building, guarded by an iron gate. Yuto picked up his camcorder that was in the passenger seat on top of a blue
folder. He flip open the small screen and held it up to his eye. He tested the zoom function and checked the batteries. Everything seem to be in order.
Yuto picked up the blue folder with the words - DOCUMENTS stamped on the top. He pulled out a sheet of paper, an email he had printed off before leaving home.

Subject: TIP / Illegal Activity at Leo Psychiatric Systems
You don't know me. Have to make this quick. They might be monitoring.
I did 2 weeks of software consult at LEO Psychiatric Systems' facilities in Mount Massive. All sorts of NDA's I am very much breaking right now but seriously, fuck those guys.
Terrible things happening there. Don't understand it. Don't believe half the things I saw. Doctors talking about patients not 'adapting' like they're supposed too, 'its' blood too toxic. People are being hurt and LEO is making money.
It needs to be exposed.
Now Yuto wasn't sure if this was true or not. LEO Corporation has done some shady things in the past, but their asylum project looked clean. Well, that's what he was here to find out. Thinking that he wouldn't be long, Yuto leaves his keys in his black jeep and slams the car door shut. He walks towards the asylum, pushing past the black iron gate. Up close, the asylum looks creepier than ever. The military vehicles surrounding the courtyard didn't help its vision either.
Now Yuto was very curious. Maybe the project wasn't as clean as everyone had thought. Yuto hops up the steps to the front door and tried to open it only to find out that the door was locked.
"Great." Yuto muttered to himself. He looked around to see that another iron gate stretched across, preventing anyone from going around the building, but it didn't take long for him to find his new entrance. On the left side of the building, at the bottom of the gate, the bars had been pulled upwards, leaving a large gaping hole. Yuto didn't think much of how the hole could have gotten there and instead just got on his hands and knees and crawled through.
Once he was through, Yuto dusted himself off. He checked to make sure his camcorder was alright before looking for a way into the asylum itself. Yuto has been an investigative journalist for years now and he was no stranger to breaking and entering. He finally spotted a section of scaffolding that was just underneath an open window on the second floor. Yuto easily climbed up, using the small ladder that was already there. Once he got to the top, Yuto listened carefully for any voices. When he heard none he jumped down into the room.
As soon as his feet touched the carpet, the light blew out, scaring the hell out of him and shrouding the room in complete darkness. He fumble with his camera for a moment before he manage to switch on the night vision. He held it up to his eye and a sharp gasp of shock escaped him. Furniture is thrown everywhere and glass shards litter the floor. There were also very strange stains on the carpet that made him feel very uncomfortable looking at. What had happen here?
Yuto carefully picked his way through the mess before slowly cracking open the door. The hallway wasn't much better. In fact, there were blood stains on the walls with no one in sight. There was at least some light so Yuto turned off the night vision, but kept the camcorder running. He walked slowly down the hallway, following the trail of blood that was on the wall. When he tried the door to get into the main lobby he was disappointed to find that it was locked. He turned around and was stun to see another person. Like a startled rabbit, they froze on the spot.
It was a boy, a bit shorter than Yuto with red and green hair. His eyes were a bright red and he was dressed in what looked to be the brown shirt and pants of an inmate's outfit but no shoes or socks. Aside from a bit of dried blood on his cheek, the boy looked unharmed but terrified.
"E-excuse me-?" Before Yuto could even finish his sentence, the other boy took off into another room, slamming the door shut behind him. "Hey! Wait!" Yuto called after him. The door wasn't locked when Yuto tried the knob, but inside was a horror show. It was supposed to be a break room of some kind but it was completely trashed. The vent that was hanging on the ceiling had been pulled open and blood dripped down from it, onto the smashed table below.
The only way out was through the vent. Yuto knew that must have been where the boy had went. Now any sensible person probably would have left by now. After all, the deserted rooms and halls plus the blood on the walls were more than enough to paint a logically picture of what had happen, but Yuto wasn't the most sensible person. He was a investigative journalist and he didn't just look for small bits of evidence. He looked for the whole story. He searched for the truth.
Yuto shut off his camcorder and with a running leap, grabbed the edge of the vent and pulled himself up into it. The fresh blood stained his hands but he ignored it and started to crawl. Surprisingly, the metal vent shaft held as he traveled down it. He could see the opening at the very end. Once he was at the edge, Yuto jumped down into the hallway below. The lobby wasn't any better than the hallway he was just in. Red blood stains the window and furniture is tossed everywhere, blocking doorways. Yuto focused his camera down at the first floor to see a human body sitting lopsided in a chair. A shutter went through him.
The tomato haired boy was nowhere in sight. He spots a door that, unlike the others, is open just a crack. Curious, he approached the door, marked as the 'Library' and pushed it open. Without meaning to, a scream escapes his throat as a headless body drops down in front of the doorway, inches from where he was. It took a few minutes for Yuto to come to terms with what he was seeing. Once he was as calm as he could be, he picked up his fallen camcorder and stood up. This was it. Whatever was in this room would be the last nail in the coffin that could shut down LEO Corporation for good.
Yuto moved slowly through the pitch black room with only his night vision in his camcorder to lead the way. Two more bodies had been killed in the same fashion the first one was, except they were still hanging from the ceiling. Still terrified, Yuto made his way to the other side of the room where he found another body, but this one was different.
He wasn't hanging upside down and his head was still intact. His body was pierced with some type of pole. It was too dark, even with the night vision, to see what it was. Yuto stepped closer to get a better look and the man gasped, stretching his arm towards him. Yuto jumped back in horror.
"They killed us. They got out. The Variants." Yuto's thoughts flew back to the boy he saw. Was he responsible? "You can't fight them. You have to hide." The man gasped as he twisted one way and then another. Yuto took another awkward step forward to try and help the man. To somehow make his pain less, but the man violently turned away from him. "You can unlock the main doors from Security Controls." The man choked. "You have to get the fuck out of this terrible place." The man let out a shuddering breath before dying, right then and there. Trembling, he starts to back up, away from the body. Now Yuto has seen some terrible and inhuman things in his life before, but this took the cake and ate it too.
Yuto's back hits against a shelf. He looks behind himself to see heads. Bloody, decapitated human heads all sitting on the shelves like rows of bottles. He stumbles out of the dark room, gasping for breath. The library just circles back into the same hallway so Yuto more or less ended up in the same place as he did when he enter the death room. He switched off his night vision, remembering the man's words.
He needed to find the security controls.
They had to be on the main floor. Seeing no staircase that he could use, Yuto began to walk around the floor however he eventually came into contact with another roadblock. The pathway to get to the other side of the second floor was blocked off by more ruined furniture, leaving just a little bit of space to squeeze through.
Yuto shut off his camcorder and sighed. Now if he was doing this a few months ago he would have no trouble squeezing through that tight space, but now? His physique wasn't what it used to be. Sucking in his gut Yuto proceed to squeeze through the small passage but then suddenly, a large meaty hand closed around his throat and pulled him out, easily holding him in the air. Yuto gaged and twisted but the man had a powerful grip on him.
Yuto's attacker was easily twice his size, with tree trunk sized arms and legs. We wore an inmate outfit and had black hair styled into a pompadour with a red band tied around his forehead. The most disturbing thing about this man wasn't his seer size, but the fact that pieces of flesh were missing from his forehead, nose, and mouth. There was a twisted smile on his face and Yuto could hear the distinct sounds of moving chains below him. This man had chains around his ankles!
"Little pig. Little pig." The man snarled. Just as Yuto was starting to think the inmate was going to choke him to death he turned and tossed him right off the second floor. Yuto fell a good few feet, before hitting the wooden floor hard. Darkness edged his vision as he heard the pig inmate lumber off, his ankles rattling. Yuto could feel his vision fading as well as his mind.
Out of the corner of his eye, Yuto spotted another inmate approaching him. He thought he was surely dead but as the inmate came closer Yuto realized that this one seem more curious about him than threaten. This inmate was a female, with long red pigtails and purple eyes. She lean down next to him, not touching him and cocked her head to the side, her eyes wide as if she was studying him.
"And who might you be?" She asked softly. She spotted the camcorder that Yuto had dropped on his way down. She picked it up and examined it. Now the darkness was beginning to dot Yuto's vision more, the pain in his back and head now dulling but still very much painful. The woman let out a sharp gasp as if she had just came to a obvious realization. "I-I see. Merciful Horakhty, you have sent me an apostle. Guard your life, young man." She set the camcorder back down beside Yuto. "You have a calling." Before Yuto could even question her or say anything darkness and pain claimed him.
When Yuto woke up again, the pain had died down to a manageable level and he was finally able to get up on his own. When he looked around he realized to his relief that he was alone. Now he just had to get out of here. The guy in the library said that he could unlock the front door through security. He just needed to find it. Yuto picked up his camcorder and began to look around.
Behind the front desk Yuto found an elevator and staircase leading up, but both were locked behind a metal gate. Besides the elevator was another staircase leading down into what he could only assume was the basement of the asylum. A trail of blood was coating the steps as if someone had dragged a body down there. Yuto shutters and tries to block the image from his mind.
On the wall there was a sign. Yuto read over it quickly and was pleased to see that the security room was in the left hallway. Just as Yuto had taken two steps down the hallway, another inmate from the end of the hall ran to the door across from him and began to pound away on it. He glanced over at Yuto once before hitting the door one last time. The door finally gave away and he disappeared inside, slamming it shut.
"Okay, so some inmates like to be left alone." Yuto thought as he kept on moving slowly along the corridor. Yuto found the door to the security room, being the first door on the left side. To his disappointment, he found out that the door was locked. He needed some type of key card to get into the room. Yuto's thoughts wonder back to the dead guard at the front desk. Could they have the key card? Decided that it was the best place to start, Yuto headed back down the hall. Just as he turns a corner, he crashes into someone who was running at him.
As Yuto is shoved to the ground his offender lets out a sharp gasp. Yuto looks up just in time to see that it was the same tomato haired boy from before. A card falls from his hand and before he could even say or do anything, the boy runs off. Yuto looks at the card he had drop and was surprised to see that it was the exact key card he needed. Was this luck?
Slowly, Yuto takes the key card and goes back to hold it up to the scanner. The scanner lets out a beep of acceptance before unlocking. The room was small, but there is a desk with several computer monitors on it. Yuto quickly begins to look for a way to unlock the front doors when sudden movement on one camera catches his eye. He glances up to make out a woman. She had her hand on some type of switch then she looks directly up at the camera.
Yuto recognized the woman as the same girl that had approached him when he had passed out on the floor. The one who had called him her 'apostle'. She had an uncanny smile on her face, almost as if she knew he was staring at her and pulled down the switch. The lights sputter before going out completely.
"Oh that bitch." Was the only thing Yuto could think as some emergency lights turned out, giving him some light. Just then, Yuto began to hear loud, pounding footsteps walking down the hallway. He turned around just in time to see Pig Man enter the room.
"Little pig, little pig." He growled. Using the small room and his much smaller size to his advantage, Yuto ducked just underneath his heavy arm and ran past him and into the hallway. Unsure of where to go, Yuto just booked it down the hallway. Just as he reached the lobby he tripped over air and fell flat on his face. Cursing himself, Yuto turned to get up but the Pig Man was nearly on top of him, his chains rattling as the heavy man charged at him.
Yuto actually thought he was going to die and that might have happen if it wasn't for the tomato boy.
"Stop!" Yuto blinks in shock as the boy jumped in front of him, arms spread out wide and feet planted firmly as if he was going to take on the charging man himself. Yuto knew that this poor boy would be squashed into paste by the other inmate but just as the Pig Man reached them, he stop. The Pig Man slowly stood up to his full height, easily towering over the boy, but he still refuse to move. "D-don't hurt. Boy help. P-please, Gong." The Pig Man seem to respond to the name, Gong. His eyes flash over at Yuto again.
"Little pig. Pigs are whores." Gong growled lowly.
"No! N-not this one. Leave alone." The boy plead in broken english. "Boy good. Boy can help." That seems to do it. Gong, the Pig Man, lets out another growl before lumbering away, his chains still dragging along the ground. Finally being able to control his breathing, Yuto stands up. As he does, the boy turns and faces him. Yuto knew that one wrong move would send this boy running again. He had to take this slow and carefully.
"T-thanks...for that." Yuto says. The tomato boy doesn't say anything, but Yuto could see that a sparkle of warmth had entered his eyes. He took this as a good sign. "And for the key card, but...why?" The boy suddenly looked nervous again.
"R-red lady said...you help us. Tell others what happen here when no one else w-would." Yuto knew who the 'red lady 'was. Who else could it be?
"So that...red lady told you to give me the key card?" The boy nods shyly.
"W-was gonna leave it for you to find. But then you...found me first." Yuto thinks for a moment, trying to make sense of it all. The...'red lady' wanted him to leave to tell the world what was happening at this place, yet...she cut off the power, effectively trapping him in here. "You will help, right? Y-you tell everyone?" Yuto was a bit startled to see the boy looking up at him with such hope...and fear.
"Of course. I don't know exactly what happen, but I'll let the whole world know of what LEO is doing here. Trust me. I'll bring them to justice." The boy seem to find comfort in that and nods at him with the most sweetest smile Yuto have ever seen. Maybe not all the inmates have lost it in here. Yuto then remembered his current situation. "H-however, I won't be able to do anything if I don't get the power back on. Do you have any idea where the generators might be?" Yuto asked. The boy froze and slowly turned. Yuto followed his gaze to see that the boy was staring down at the basement stairs.
Of course the basement would house the generators for this place. Now all Yuto had to do was get down there, restart them, and all should be dandy. Yuto turned back to the boy.
"Thanks. I'll take it from here." As Yuto moved to leave, the boy suddenly leaped on him, grabbing his arm in a vice-like grip.
"NO!" He cried. "Can't go down!"
"W-what? Why not?" The boy looked up at him, eyes wide with terror.
"Not safe! BB down there!"
"BB?" Yuto raised an eyebrow in question.
"B-basement Beast! He hunts there!" Okay, now that didn't sound nice but what other choice did Yuto have?
"I can't just sit around and hope for something to happen. I need to get those doors open and the only way to do that is to go into the basement." Yuto could see the boy's worried look. "Don't worry. I'll be careful." He called over his shoulder as he began to move down the staircase. When Yuto reached the bottom he wasn't at all please to see that the basement was flooded. The water was only ankle deep, but it was freezing. Taking a deep breath, Yuto was about to enter the dark basement when he felt someone yank him back and onto the staircase. "W-whoa!" He barely manages to catch himself on the railing. He looked up to see that the boy was now in front of the door.
"N-no. I...I'll go." Yuto was stun. This boy was going to fix the generators for him?
"We'll go together then, I guess-"
"No! You stay!" The boy shouted with so much conviction in his voice. "I-I'll go and fix."
"But I thought you were scared of the Basement Beast?" Yuto questions. The boy gives Yuto an uneasy smile.
"I'll be fine. I know how to hide." Before Yuto could object anymore, the boy disappears through the door, splashing through the swallow water.
"H-hold on a moment!" Yuto follows after him despite the boy's wishes. The emergency lights that had came on gave little light in the room, but Yuto could see that the door to get to the next part of the basement was blocked with a heavy desk. Beside it, the brick wall had a giant gap in it where the boy was actually wiggling through to get to the other side.
On the other side now, the boy turned to look back at him. Yuto could see that his red eyes were filled with fear but shook his head when Yuto tried to squeeze through the crack.
"Don't. You're too big. I told you, I'll do it." Yuto lets out a heavy sigh, nodding.
"Fine. Just...be careful." The boy nods before disappearing further into the basement, his feet splashing through the cold liquid that flooded the floor. Yuto's heart squeezed in pity when he realized that the boy was barefooted, but there was nothing that he could do. The only thing he could do was wait.
So Yuto went back to the staircase, sat down on the steps, and waited.
Valentine: "So what did you guys think of the first chapter?"
Shay: "Okay, first off-"
Lulu: "Shay, don't you dare."
Shay: "Why would he go to a mental hospital and not bring a weapon?"
Valentine: "Well, the Yuto in this story-"
Shay: Also, why did he not crawl back through the vents? He already had enough footage and he already knew the front doors were locked the first time he tried them. He could have just went back the way he came. It would have not been difficult."
Lulu: "Shay, for the love of Ra, please stop."
(Lulu groans, her face in her hands in embarrassment.)
Shay: "And how did he not hear Gong the first time around? The guy is an elephant. No offense, Gong."
Gong: "No need."
(Gong shakes his head.)
Valentine: "Well...umm..."
Shay: "Also how did he even survive that fall? Yuto, you are durable but you landed head first. You should have suffer from some type of head trauma. You couldn't have just walk that off."
(Yuto shrugs helplessly.)
Yuto: "This is a different universe, Shay. I have no say in what the other 'me' does in that universe."
Shay: "And another thing, does the Yuto in that universe now have god-like hacking powers because-"
Celina: "Shay, so help me, if you do not shut up I will tape your mouth shut!"
Shay: "I'm just saying, this 'horror' story is unrealistic."
Valentine: "Well...it's based off a horror game so..."
Lulu: "I'm sorry, Valentine. My brother has never been a fan of Halloween."
Sora: "Really now? Wouldn't have guessed."
(Sora said, biting into his candy apple.)
Valentine: "M-moving on then..."
Yugo: "To the next chapter! This is getting good!"
