This is a prologue to my new story (hopefully) coming soon....called "A Boundless Heart"

Tell me what you think so it doesn't have to remain a one-shot!

Prologue

He sat with his fingers digging into his legs. His nerves threatened to overcome him. But it was just a matter of moments before his fate would be decided. He closed his eyes and waited. And then the time came and he heard the voice within the confines of his mind.

"Hmmm....let's see, this is a tough one. You have much intelligence and possibility for cunning. Not to mention the conflict of light and dark I see in your heart. It makes sense that you have come from a very long line of Slytherins, but it just doesn't seem right for you. Your courage is stronger than many. What would you say to....GRYFFINDOR!!!"

Scorpius opened his eyes and expected cheering, the way each previous first year had been accepted into their new houses. But he heard only light clapping, mostly from young students who didn't know what was happening. As he scanned the room, he was met with shock and disappointment everywhere he looked. The Slytherins were mad that a pureblood was lost to Gryffindor. And the Gryffindors were shocked that a Malfoy was put into their house. But Scorpius nodded at Professor McGonagall as she removed the sorting hat and gestured for him to take a seat with his house.

When he got to the table, he looked up surreptitiously to see if he could find any friendly faces. He saw mistrust on the faces of the two Potter boys. He didn't remember the second-years' name, but the boy his own age had been sorted into Gryffindor shortly before he had been. He knew his name was Albus, but he thought he did not have much of a chance of making friends with him or with anyone else in his house for that matter.

He turned his attention back to the sorting and saw a girl with curly red hair slowly make her way to the chair. She sat down and smiled as the hat roared the name of Gryffindor as soon as it touched her head. The students at the Gryffindor table erupted with the cheers. Those were the shouts Scorpius had hoped to receive for himself as well. When the new girl made her way to the table, he expected her to sit next to the boys who were excitedly motioning for her to join them. But she surprised him by taking the space directly to his right. She put her hand out to him immediately.

"Hi Scorpius, I'm Rose Weasley." He shook her hand slowly, not believing that someone was treating him so well after he had practically convinced himself that he would remain friendless for his entire education.

The older Potter looked at his cousin with wide eyes.

"You sure about this, Rosie? I thought your dad told you to stay away from purebloods."

Scorpius was surprised. Apparently, this Potter brother was one to make his opinions known.

Rose just laughed nonchalantly.

"James, you know he was only joking. Besides, Uncle George tells me to try and surprise Daddy as much as I can. And being friends with Scorpius Malfoy will definitely surprise him." She smiled and then the three of them were laughing when they imagined the look on her dad's face when he first heard the news of a Malfoy in Gryffindor house and close friends with his innocent daughter, no less. Scorpius looked around at the smiling people in his house and realized that he might not be in such a bad place after all.
