A plane flew above Washington DC, a red light flashing in the night sky. Passengers aboard the plane slept peacefully awaiting the coming of the dawn and the return to solid ground and loved ones. Below, the lights of the capital glittered like tiny little stars. The air was balmy and carried on it a light breeze with the smell of promised rain. Cars wove down deserted streets, passed quiet houses and deserted memorials. Cherry blossoms blew from their trees, coating the FDR Memorial in a blanket of pink. The reflecting pool caught the reflection of the moon as Lincolns statue sat, a silent watch guard. As the darkness deepened and the city slept, one man sat alone in an oval office, pouring over a pile of papers. His head begins to nod, jerking up every so often only to droop once more. The stress showed in his face; the long nights debating, the endless weeks waiting for his wife to come home, the years spent agonizing till the next race. The man stands up, carefully setting the papers aside, and exits the room shutting the door softly beside him.
"Jed?"
"Shhh Abbey, go back to sleep." Abbey saw her husband's blurry figure shuffle across the floor towards the bathroom. The light clicked on, and she could see him lean over the sink. Fighting off the pull of sleep, Abbey swung her legs out from under the covers and on to the floor. She padded over to the doorway as Jed turned on the faucet, splashing water on his face. He turned the sink off and lifted his head up, looking at Abbey through the mirror. She handed him a towel, and he could see her forehead creased with worry and her deep brown eyes filled with concern. Jed turned around, drying his face with the towel, and leaned his back against the sink basin. He beckoned for her and she came, placing a soft hand on his chest. In response, Jed wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in, kissing each of her eyelids in turn before placing a gentle kiss on her lips. Abbey sighed, welcoming the feeling of his lips on hers, and reached for Jed's hands, grasping them tightly. She broke the kiss, staring into his eyes, "I shouldn't have stayed away so long." Jed smiled down at her. "Do you know what happens when I stay away for too long?"
"What, sweet knees?" Jed spun Abbey around so she faced the mirror, and he clasped his hands around her waist, resting his chin on her head.
Abbey rested her hands on top of his, "You start to get these crazy ideas in that head of yours that you have the power to change everything." Jed chuckled. "But you don't Jed; you can't be so hard on yourself. You're human, you're going to make mistakes and you have to be willing to accept that fact and move on."
"It would be a hell of a lot easier if my wife were around to support me." Jed said becoming defensive.
"Oh no Jed Bartlett, you can't blame this on me. I have done nothing wrong and you know it!" She turned and walked out of the bathroom.
"Abbey!" Jed's annoyed voice came from the bathroom and he appeared in the doorway. Abbey leaned against the desk and stared at him as he came and sat down on the couch. He sighed heavily and closed his eyes, letting his head fall in his hands. Abbey walked to him and stood, running her fingers through his hair. Jed leaned forward, kissing her stomach and letting his head rest on Abbey. Abbey held his head against her. "Abbey -" Jed said his voice cracking.
"Shhh baby, I'm here."
