Disclaimer: I don't own Scrubs.

This is an idea that popped into my head after watching JD's final episode where he gives Dr Cox the book of rants. However I think it hasn't turned out too well; but I'll let you guys decide that.

It had become somewhat of a ritual.

He'd always wake up at exactly 3.42am, always had ever since he was a child, the voices ringing in his ears.

First it was the angry words his parents exchanged when they thought he couldn't hear, then it was the taunts of the school yard bullies, followed by the boarish disdain of the college jocks.

"Idiot... geek... weirdo... twinkie... useless... useless... useless!"

But now, now there was just one voice that dominated those waking thoughts, pushing all others to the background.

"Hey, hey, Val. You know, you know what's funny? Ever since I started taking care of your patients not one of them has died!"

Sometimes he feels like he's drowning in the hatred of others, but he has found a way to keep swimming.

It is the only thing nowadays that keeps him going every day in the face of the stress of work, the failed love-life and the constant, constant angry voice that wakes him up at night.

And while his daydreams allow a brief escape during the day, it is his nightly ritual that purges the pain away, allowing the smile to stay on his face.

It was an accidental discovery when, in his teenage years when his self-esteem was at its lowest and the pain of the insults at their highest, his coping mechanism caused a crimson droplet to fall and soak into a random bit of tissue.

The resulting red stain formed a shaky letter and inspiration struck!

The first few were written in his blood, until he found himself no longer cutting for the pain but just to provide the ink.

To him it was like when he wrote the words, they poured out of his head and onto the paper, which he could then lock away in the box under his bed, never to disturb him again.

And so every night he woke gasping and sweating at 3.42am and wrote the words swirling round his head.

It was his ritual.

Please read & review. I might do a second part where JD decides to give Dr Cox the book, depending on what you guys think.
