Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbows are visions
They're only illusions
Rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told
And some chose to believe it
But I know they're wrong
Wait and see

"Lieutenant, do you believe that there is something awaiting us at the end of rainbows?"

Riza looked up from her work, surprised. Sure, Roy always asked some random, silly questions, but this one...

"It is only out of songs and fairy tales, sir," she said, not really replying the question.

"Do you believe it then?" Roy pursued.

"Yes, maybe," she answered softly.

"Oh. I never thought you'd believe in such things. I mean, with your no-nonsense attitude and stuff..." His voice trailed off.

"I am a woman, sir. And I do have my fantasies." Roy snorted here. "Even though you may not believe it, sir," she added stiffly upon hearing Roy.

"What do you think we'll find at the end of rainbows then?" Roy asked.

"What we want most, I guess. Things only out of our dreams," she replied.

"And what will that be, in your case?" Roy was hoping that Riza was give a reply, but there was no chance.

"That, sir, is none of your business. What is you business, however, is that you still have ten minutes before the deadline for these paperwork, and you still have not started to work."

Roy sighed, and started to sign the paperwork feverishly. After ten minutes, he promptly handed the stack of finished paperwork to Riza.

"Good, sir. You have completed your work on time. Which is rare," Riza took the stack of paperwork and turned to leave the office.

"Wait, Hawkeye," Roy called. Riza stopped and turned back to face him. "Do you want to know what I think I'll find at the end of rainbows?"

Riza shook her head. "No, sir." She paused and smiled at him. A genuine, beautiful smile. "I think I know the answer already."

Roy smiled back. "And I think I know yours as well."

Both of them knew what each other wanted most.

True love.

In other words, they wanted each other, without the walls around them. They wanted the person beneath the mask. The person that they can love, without ever having to worry about rules of fraternization.

Their true self, the person before the Ishbal war, awaited each other at the end of the rainbow.

Someday we'll find it
Rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

A/N: Sweet. How sweet. This is perhaps the sweetest thing I've written in a while. Even I am affected by the great sweetness of this story. I love the song Rainbow Connection. Please read & review!
