Elizabeth stood on the beach, staring out at the water long after the last glimpse of Will had disappeared beneath the waves.
Lost to the Dutchman and the depths of sea, seven years until they could meet again on land. How much would change by then? She'd be no longer young. Will would never age, but what change might the ocean work on him before he could stand on dry ground once more?
A lone gull cried and Elizabeth looked up, seeing it soar across the sky. Such birds lived on the border of land and sea, nesting in the salt-sprayed rocks and taking a living from the sea. They lived well enough that way. Could she?
She watched the heart they'd drawn in the sand, caressed by the waves, washing slowly into the sea.
AN: Originally written for Blue Skies prompts at LJ. The scenario bothered me. Not just that Will took Davy Jones place, but that I'm sure I could find a way to meet my husband in the surf if he couldn't be on dry land. ;)
