Dean sat at the table, holding a bottle of beer in one hand and resting his head on the other one. Cas had died. Again. But this time he didn't seem to be coming back. It killed Dean, mostly because he couldn't have done anything. But he had just lost a brother, and drowning himself in guilt was the only way he could get through it. Or at least convince himself that he could. He knew Sam was concerned. Couldn't blame him, Dean had been more distant than normal. The pain of losing Cas, mom, and the stress of taking care of Jack was taking over him.
"Dean" Sam's voice floated over to him. Dean looked up to see his brother staring at him with a concerned look on his face. He despised that look, it made him feel weak, like there was something wrong with him. There wasn't, he was fine.
"Hey Sammy" Dean said, looking down ever so slightly. Sam walked towards him cautiously. He loathed his brother for looking like he was trying not to startle a deer. Maybe he loathed himself more for making Sam do that. "What do you want?"
Sam flinched at how unwelcoming Dean sounded, but he looked past it. "You've been sitting here for three hours. I found a case. Wanna go?" Sam asked. Dean shook his head.
"No". Sam sighed, and all Dean could think was that he was letting his brother down. Dean felt like a complete failure after losing everything. He couldn't bring himself to do anything but drink.
Sam hesitated and then said, "what about a zoo?" Dean raised his eyebrow at that. "No, no. hear me out. You've been cooped up in here too long, and animals are always great".
"Alright. So what about the kid?" Dean asked. Sam shrugged.
"We take him with us." Sam stared at Dean earnestly.
"I don't know Sammy…" Dean trailed off. Sam kept staring, using those sad eyes that he had. Dean sighed. Even in the depressed state that he was in, he couldn't refuse those puppy dog eyes. So he sighed, and stood up. "Fine".
Sam nodded and turned away, but Dean saw a hint of a smile. It made Dean feel a little bit lighter. Of course he was still broken up about everything, but so was Sam, and he couldn't forget that. For both Sammy and himself. So if he could make Sam happy by just being there and going to a freaking zoo with him, it made it worth it. Hell, it made being alive worth it.
