They obviously cared for each other, anyone who looked at them, even from a distance could tell that small fact. The constant loud bickering was a simply an easy way to try and cover up the confusing feelings they didn't want to face at the moment. The entire team saw it a mile away, well that is after the even more obvious romantic tension between Robin and Starfire was resolved. They could tell that every biting remark, snarling sneer, clawing outbreak, or angry pounce of vicious retorts was simply their way of denying it. But even with the clear obnoxious anger at their own feelings rather than each other they would never admit it, not even for a second because that was a weakness that they couldn't exploit.
They both agreed without even knowing it that any motion forth as something more was a risk, aside from the fact that they thought it was hopeless, that their brittle friendship would be ruined if it was even approached it. So they just sat and let the feelings bubble under the surface just festering getting more aggravated by the day with the abrasive task of their interactions. Their words would cut deeper than any knife could, so much so that they began to fear the need of stitches.
He thought that the girl of his affections was simply never going to see him as more than the idiotic child he really wasn't, that she'd never know the layers to him, like he knew of hers. He knew of her turmoil, the internal struggle with primal instincts threating break free and take control with even a moment's hesitation. He was afraid that even if she did feel more she'd never love him for him that it be simply for the mask, while he was a naturally cheery person who loved jokes there was so much more to him and he was afraid that he'd never get to share that with her but also to share it.
She feared her own feelings, she feared she'd lose control, she feared that he'd never care, she feared… everything she didn't know she like routine and constants to make order in the chaos. But he didn't he was spontaneous he wanted to things that normal people saw as either weird or crazy. And she both cringed at it and admired it. She just knew that no matter what she did he'd never find the craziest thing of all appealing, and that was loving her. She was dark, she was creepy, rude, sarcastic, boring and spent to much time reading. And most of all different, he'd never notice her with his bright, energetic personality, outgoing ways, his blindingly happy outlook despite the grievances that had become him, and his blindingly beautiful smile
She was intriguing, she was mysterious, she was dark but in a good way, she was witty and intelligent, interesting and spent more time than most people reading. Her smile was slight and hesitant hard to coax but that much more rewarding when gotten. Why would she look at a green freak who can't even make her smile properly, he was weird, short, scrawny, and smiled too often, he was so different it would never work.
Both had fears and neither spoke them, they only thought, for the second they were said it they would never be able to take it back, the fears, and insecurities as silly and petty as they were kept them apart when all they wanted was to feel each other's embrace, and to be completely lost in it…
A/N: okay I know I should be updating my current stories but I had this idea and had to publish it.
