Buna; 1943

I was an SS officer working at the Buna concentration camp in Nazi Germany during World War II.

I had no real job. I patrolled the areas between bunkers to make sure no men tried to escape, like they would make it very far with the other gaurds and electric fences. I was sometimes assigned duty at the hangings, to 'keep the peace'.

Like it wasn't too late already.

He was a Jew. He was arrested with his family. Then, within the camp, he was arrested again for stealing an extra ration.

He was beautiful. Midnight, curly hair. A delicate face. His eyes never lifted from his shoes.

He was to be hanged.

His brother, who he had stolen the ration for, had to be restrained during the execution. I was to lead the boy to the gallows.

I watched him swing.

I didn't realize until just beofre he dropped who he was.

His eyes lifted just before he fell.

HIs eyes met mine.

I screamed when the rope when tight.
