This is actually one of the last chapters from another, much longer story I am trying to write, but this was done and I really wanted to post it. This is about the night James and Lily die. Title and lyrics from Cannonball by Damien Rice.
Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to lie
Life taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannonball
When James heard the gate crash open, he knew immediately they had no chance. He only prayed to god that he would spare his wife, son, and unborn child. If he had to sacrifice himself for it to happen, it was a price he was more than willing to pay. Lily looked at him in pure terror. He grabbed her and kissed her for the last time.
He poured all of the love he had into the kiss, and he felt time stop for a moment. He ended it too quickly and shoved Lily to the stairs.
"Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Run! I'll hold him off."
She looked at him and he could see the tears begin to trickle down her cheeks. Gods, he did not want to leave this woman, but his desire for her to live was much stronger than anything he had ever felt before.
"Lily! Go." She gave him one last look before turning and running up the stairs to their son.
He heard the door blast off its hinges and he turned to face his doom.
Lily rushed into Harry's room and grabbed the baby from his cot. He must have felt his mother's fear and anguish, and began to cry as well.
Lily felt it, the exact moment Voldemort killed her husband, the love of her life. She felt as though half of her had died as well, and she couldn't breathe. She was afraid, but not for herself. Her son and the small being inside of her would die because an evil man hated their parents and feared a prophecy that might not come to pass.
She tried to apparate them out of the house, but Voldemort must have expected a situation as such, and placed an anti-apparation charm on the premises. Lily knew that she would not be able to fight and win. James hadn't even stood a chance, and he was braver, stronger, and a much better dueler than she. She also knew that her unborn baby would not live through the night. But maybe, just maybe, she could try to protect the only one who truly might survive.
When the door to the nursery opened, Lily had placed Harry safely in his cot once more, after giving him one last kiss on the cheek. She stood in front of the baby, one hand holding the wood protectively, the other covering her stomach.
The revolting being that entered the room with a wand point at her was more evil creature than man, and Lily felt fresh fear course through her veins.
She cried out, "Not Harry, please, not Harry!"
Red eyes narrowed into slits at her as he hissed, "Stand aside you silly girl."
Lily did not move from her spot, shielding baby Harry, and lifted her chin to meet her fate.
A flash of green light filled the room, and bits and pieces of Lily's life flashed before her eyes.
Christmas with her parents and Petunia, getting her letter into Hogwarts, meeting her best friend and the Marauders, her first date with James, her friend's wedding, her and James' wedding, the birth of her son, finding out she was pregnant again. Then there was James standing before a bright, white light, his hand outstretched, reaching towards hers.
She felt the warm sunshine on her face, and accepted his hand. Lily took one last look back at her beloved son.
"I love you, Harry. Your father and I will always be watching over you. We have given you everything we have. Use your strength to the defeat the darkness; use your love to conquer the evil. Goodbye my darling baby boy."
And with that, Lily and James left a world torn apart by fear and anger, making their way into an eternity of happiness.
Please review and let me know what you think. I hope to get more of this story up in the near future.
