Why and Because
She can't help, but keeps walking up and down in her office. On the desk there's an envelope in cream color, and on it there's her name: Addison Forbes Montgomery-Wilder.
She doesn't know what to do, she knows what there is inside it, and can't stop thinking about the sender.
Should she phone him?, she wondered.
Finally, she finds the courage and dialed the number. He should be home, now, but she calls him on the cell phone.
"Hey." of course, he knows it's her.
"I've received the invitation to your wedding." she slowly tells him.
"Yes." he answers in the same low tone.
"Should I come? I mean..." she suddenly sobs, and his heart stops.
"You-you should... Please, stop crying, Addison, you're making it even more harder to me."
"You think it's easy to me, Mark? I'm here, and I'm crying and sobbing, and I'm married. I have a son and I shouldn't..."
He sighs, and they both stay silent for a while, lost in their thoughts.
"You married him first." he said in the end. "So you don't have any right to phone me and cry, because, you know, I didn't break the bet, and I came there for you, and I would've done anything to make you feel better, and I know I said no, and I didn't ask you again, Addison, but God dammit after all these years you should know how much I'll always love you. I love her. And I want her, cause I need to touch her and she makes me feel absolutely safe, and I think I deserve this. But I will always be in love with your laugh, and your curly hair, and with all of you Addison, because you made me feel safe first. I loved you first, and it didn't work. So stop crying, please, cause you're the love of my life, okay?" at the end of the speech, he was almost screaming, and he gasps for breath now.
A smile starts to grow up on her lips, and the sun finally rises in her soul.
"So that's why you decided to marry her?" she asks lighter.
"Yes. And because I couldn't have you anymore."
"That's sad."
"I told you, I love her, Addie."
"I know you do. I've always known we wouldn't be together."
"So that's why you decided to marry him?" he asks her.
"I married him... I think we're fine together. No, okay, we're more then fine, we're good, wonderful, special... fantastic. We're MFEO, as Maya said. But every time... we hurt each other. And my heart suffers when you heart me, and suffers even more when I understand that I hurt you, Mark."
"I know." he whispers.
She sighs, because she knows that soon the call will be over.
"Will you come to my wedding, then?"
"You came to mine." she says.
"I'm sorry I hurt you."
"I hurt you, too, calling you." she knows him well.
This time, it's him that sighs.
"See you on the 14th, then."
"One more thing, Addison."
"What?" she waits for him to ask. Or tell, or whatever he needs to do. She knows it will be hard to forget, but every time it seems less difficult to her.
"It's been almost ten years... since the last time we slept together. I miss that Red. My wedding means that it's over once again."
"I'm doing fine. And you know, I'm feeling better now. I've been begging to hear your voice for a while."
"Yeah, I guess I should call you more frequently."
"You should."
"Goodbye, Addison."
"Bye. You're the love of my life, too..."
So, what do ya think? I know it's strange and sad, but I completely love to write sad stories about Mark and Addie, cause I think they'll always love each other deep inside, but they can't be together, as I said in the fic. I hope you guys liked it! :)
