The Weaver's Bonny
Characters: Heidi, Sulpicia, Aro, assorted Volturi guards, Edward, Victoria
Author's note: the title and subtitles are from The Devil's Nine Questions, a lullaby about a woman outsmarting and (spoiler alert!) winning her fate from the devil.
This fic spat, hissed, and refused to come out of my drafts folder for months. Not a small number of my fics have abandonment issues, but hopefully all 10 chapters will see the light of day!
1. What is whiter than milk?
Wavering in the corrupt and decadent Volturi, the lovely Lutheran Heidi kisses the German snowflakes on her new grey cloak. They are unmelting under her crystal lips.
She dreams of her five dead sisters, the whores who became swans and flew away. Feathers rasp the bone beneath her shoulders and she seeks flame so she may join them.
In Volterra, she is a servant to men's desires. They chip at her like pilgrims breaking rock and plaster from a shrine—she's shaped however they like, so she's lime dust, so she fits inside a palm, a tacky white aftermath. Her life here is a smear on a trouser leg.
She dreams of death, of flying.
