The basic purpose of a guardian is to protect their charges. Fundamental use is generally what those without other intentions strive for. If we have those who require our services, and we have no other purpose in our lives, we focus our attentions towards our charges. We strive to protect and raise our charges into someone who can raise themselves once the need to do so comes.
As I am impaled upon a blade that pierces me to the point where no savior can rescue me, I realize there's nothing left I can say or do for you now. I've come so far in this world, and I should see that it matters that I'm dying to someone other than you...but that's really a silly thing to see when it's not true. A guardian's purpose is to protect and raise his charge. My life has been devoted to raising you into the strong young man that I've always envisioned you becoming. It's a waste of time, you say? I'd say not. It's simply the opposite. I could have easily wasted my time doing something else...but this brings about progress. You're going to be the strongest of the pack now, little man. This is the part where you show us that Strider swagger of yours. You may not see it happening as fast as I do, but you're so strong now that it makes me smile on this whole situation. This is the part where you find that strength that I see there...and. when I think about it, I guess that strength has always been there, really. Get ready to show them that Strider strength, little man.

Sure, it didn't have to be some sort of catastrophic event...but that's just how it turned out. This is happening right now, and this is how it's going to happen. This is how we'll write it off in a few years. This seems like a really shitty deal, doesn't it, little man? I'm not going to be able to see you finish growing up. This isn't fair to you, this really ain't, so I'm sorry about that. Keep your head up, though boss.
